Hôtel la Couleuvrine Sarlat Centre Ville

We really enjoyed our stay at La Couleuvrine. We loved that the building is an old rampart tower from the 15th century, and we got to stay at the very top! We loved the atmosphere of the place -- it fit in perfectly with the town. The location was perfect. The staff was very friendly, the breakfast good, the room comfortable and fun. We had a car and did pay the 15 euro a nice for a nice safe gated parking area about a 5-10 minute walk away.

Stayed here a few nights with a group of friends. This is a nicely located hotel three or four minutes walk into the town centre. There is lots of parking immediately opposite. Being an old building brings with it lots of character as well as rooms being scattered about over several floors. There is a very small lift, thankfully, that will take guests up to the 1st and 2nd floors. Many rooms however will still require climbing some steps. The rooms vary in size and shape. The first room allocated was itself divided on two floor levels, with a step between, but reception were most helpful and provided an alternative. Although in the annex and smaller, it was perfectly fine. All bedrooms appear to have modern bathroom fittings and were very clean and nicely maintained. All the staff were pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was buffet style and, perhaps a bit unusually, included a hot selection as well as continental. Our party took evening meals together in the hotel which was nicely served and to most people’s taste. The hotel's restaurant is popular with local groups for evening party meals. Vegetarians were catered for. Nice selection of local wines from the small bar area. While sadly there is no hotel lounge, the hotel does have tables and chairs immediately outside which makes for a pleasant area for an evening drink in pleasant weather.

We stayed two nights at the La Coulverine, paying E116 per night for a suite large enough for a family of four. We had a fair experience. The hotel is located right on the edge of the medieval town (the old ramparts) and our room was on the third floor, with two rooms. A very large main room with a double bed and a second, much smaller room with two singles. We found the suite a perfect size for us, but others might find the second room too small. Our suite was clean and nicely decorated, as was the rest of the hotel. But many parts of the hotel felt a bit dark and dingy. That’s how the building was originally made and no complaints about that but a little extra lighting would have been great. Otherwise, it was quite charming. The bathroom needs some work. Yes, it has just been renovated but they’ve installed one of those small complete shower cubicles with the rounded doors – and the doors were falling off! I’ve seen that in other hotels on these kinds of shower cubicles too, so I’m guessing it’s a design fault. But worse was the mould above the shower, which really needs to be attended to. The location was just about perfect – walk out the door and you’re in the old city. So restaurants etc are very easy to find. Just as well, as I was not overly impressed by the breakfast at La Coulverine. Parking needs to be found on the street and metres topped up regularly. There’s a Laundromat just across the street, which was super convenient.

We were visiting family and wanted a hotel within walking distance of restaurants and bars. This hotel fits that perfectly. We were in the Main Street market on Saturday morning within minutes. The initial greeting was friendly. Our room was on the 2nd floor, accessed by a tiny lift. The room itself was reasonably sized with a modern toilet and bathroom worked well into the old building. The only downside was no air con, but we were able to leave the window open and the fan on. The bed was comfortable with plugs on the bed side tables. We met friends for lunch on the Saturday and ate outside. The fixed priced menu was excellent and well priced. We will return next year.

Interesting tower room but very very noisy traffic and room very basic.

What a fantastic stay in Sarlat-la-Canada! Beautiful Hotel with great, really friendly and helpful staff and the best dinner I have had in France!
