My stay at Jozankei Ivylodge this time was utterly thrilling. The hotel offered top-notch service, including a dedicated 1-on-1 butler who was attentive and thoughtful throughout our entire stay. Waking up to the sound of birdsong in the morning, and opening my eyes to an expanse of lush greenery, was breathtakingly beautiful. The thoughtful little touches were a definite bonus, like the complimentary POLA samples – a wonderful unexpected surprise. Dinner was a traditional Kaiseki meal, a leisurely, drawn-out affair from dusk till dark, with every single course exquisitely prepared. Upon leaving, I had only one thought: see you again!

It had been two years since my last visit, and I was once again delighted to return and stay at this wonderful hotel. The privacy remains just as excellent as I remembered. All the staff, regardless of age, are incredibly warm, courteous, and attentive, remembering every little detail you request. The Okami (female manager) is still elegant and gracious, truly the gold standard for Japanese onsen hotels in my opinion. On the first night, we upgraded to the Teppanyaki course, which absolutely exceeded our expectations. I highly recommend that fellow guests planning a stay book this set menu in advance via email (an additional ¥24,000 for two people). Chef Hoshizawa was delightful, making for a particularly pleasant dining experience with great conversation throughout the meal.

The selection of bathrobes provided was limited. The women's bathrobes were ill-fitting and too long, making them unflattering for photos. However, the environment was superb. Both the lobby and the restaurant offered fantastic views. The Teppanyaki was also excellent and definitely worth a try.

Our appetizer was steamed egg with fresh sea urchin, a delightful contrast of raw and cooked that highlighted both sweetness and intense freshness. Then came the cooked scallop, crowned with a dollop of caviar. The recommended way to enjoy it was to first savor a tiny bit of caviar for a taste of the ocean, then enjoy the scallop and remaining caviar together in one mouthful, followed by a refreshing sip of chilled sake.
The speed at which the dishes were served could practically qualify for a Guinness World Record! The server stationed near the entrance discreetly observed us throughout our meal. Typically, within about ten seconds of us finishing a dish, they would gently approach and ask if they could clear the plate. The next course would then arrive within approximately five minutes. In fact, I found myself deliberately slowing down my eating pace, half-jokingly fearing the kitchen wouldn't be able to keep up with us.
Sashimi, tempura, pan-seared wagyu... I couldn't help but wonder if the head chef here was Chinese? Regardless, the kitchen absolutely nailed it – delivering both incredible speed and excellent quality.

Overall, it was a truly relaxing and pleasant experience. The hotel's serene environment was particularly impressive. The hot spring water was crystal clear, wonderfully comfortable, and incredibly soothing. Staff were polite and helpful during both check-in and when offering assistance. The Kaiseki dinner was exquisite and delicious.
