Hacienda Cusin, a historic estate founded in 1602 and converted into a country inn in 1990, offers a unique blend of colonial charm and natural beauty. The meticulously maintained gardens and antique-adorned interiors create an enchanting atmosphere that transports guests to a bygone era. However, some aspects of the property show signs of aging, and the dining experience could benefit from a more diverse menu. I would have loved to give 5 star rating to this property, if not for the lack of recreational facilities LOCATION:Nestled near Otavalo, Ecuador, Hacienda Cusin provides easy access to the famous Otavalo markets, majestic volcanoes, serene lakes, and rich indigenous culture. The surrounding landscape offers ample opportunities for exploration and immersion in local traditions. DINE + DRINK: The on-site restaurant serves a variety of dishes, including international options like chicken nuggets and sandwiches. While the food is satisfactory, the menu is a bit limited and lacks enough choices of traditional Ecuadorian cuisine, which could enhance the dining experience. ROOM: We stayed in one of the rooms across the restaurant & bar , so this review is based on that; SIZE: Spacious enough for 2 adults and simple baggage; VIEW: ; AIR-CON: Perfectly functioning cooler that helped in setting the perfect room temperature; BED: Comfortable bed that played the expected part of putting us to sleep; BATHROOM:Good sized bathroom with a Stand-in shower; TOILETRIES:Good quality toiletries FACILITIES: No Gym or pool on site. However, the hacienda boasts beautiful gardens, a vegetable garden, and various nooks and crannies to explore, providing a tranquil retreat for guests. The Horse Stables is a must visit during your stay. SERVICE: Friendly staff that cared for all our needs with a smile and made us feel pampered and well taken care of. Special Shout-out to HECTOR and ROMEIRO from the restaurant HOW WIRED YOU WILL BE: Free Wi-Fi that works well all over the property, and the speed is good! No Television in the room

Where do I start? The grounds are so beautiful with so many nooks and crannies to explore and enjoy. Including in the grounds is the vegetable garden, which looks and tastes (breakfast and dinners) scrumptious. Speaking of food, the meals were very good! We definitely looked forward to the three-course dinners. Let's speak after dinner now! The turndown service makes your room feel so comfortable with the water water bottle under your sheets and a fire roaring. The coziness of the fire helps you drift off to a nice sleep after a hard day hiking calderas in the surrounding area or shopping the Otavalo market. During the day, after an adventure, we'd sit in a library or on a porch reading or playing cards. We also tried our hand at table tennis but skipped out on playing pool. Please also go explore the Monastery and find the llamas. Overall, we absolutely loved our three nights at Hacienda Cusin and look forward to coming back on our next trip to Ecuador.

Staying at this charmingly restored hacienda for 3 nights was part of a specially curated tour of Ecuador and it surpassed all expectations. We absolutely loved the manner in which this hacienda has been lovingly presented in the way the rooms are decorated with vintage pieces of sculpture, brassware and paintings and this trend was evident throughout the hacienda. The staff were truly a wonderful team of Ecuadorians who couldn’t do enough for its guests. We met Julio who was always smiling whenever we came across him and he would start the fire going in our room each evening which made it a cosy return to after dinner. The front desk staff were exemplary in the level of service they provided. When we needed medical assistance, Melissa efficiently and promptly rang their local doctor and arranged for him to come to the hacienda the following morning. In the interim, she organised for a staff member to attend a local pharmacy to obtain hydration supplies. Daniela at the front desk happily assisted us in making an international call when the need suddenly arose. Dinner at the restaurant was a gastronomic delight as the set menu was changed daily, with the meals being of a high standard and ably served by Enrique.

This was a lovely day trip for lunch. It is a magical place with a lot of history. Spectacular service. The waiters knew the history of their ancestors, which they proudly shared with us. The food was delicious, plus the waiter knew about wine as well as how to serve it, he knew how to perfectly describe each dish and how to serve them perfectly on the table. We also did some horseback riding in the hotel's woodland and saw spectacular views of Lake San Pablo. Our horseback guide was, also very helpful. We loved this trip, the local people are proud of their history and the service was first class.

The staff at Hacienda Cusin will make sure that your trip to the Andean highlands is magical. Before we arrived, we were in contact with Daniela, Melisa and Valeria who responded quickly to any questions or requests. Cusin has lots of options for day trips in the surrounding towns. They organized a dream trip to the hot springs of Chachimbiro with a great guide named Christian who took us to an hacienda owned by Camilo Andrade-a respected Ecuadoran artist- for lunch and a tour of his paintings, sculptures and architecture. They organized a beautiful horseback journey with a wonderful guide, Ulbaldo, who has worked with the horses there for 30 years. He took us through Eucalyptus groves and jaw-dropping mountain views. Every morning we were greeted with fresh cut flowers, tropical fruit, eggs any way and homemade pastries. Hector, Ramiro, Javier, Enrique and Pamela always made eating at Cusin a five star experience. You can choose Lunch and dinner on their fixed menu (that includes three courses) or eat from an extensive selection of other choices. We chose the fixed menu each day with vegetarian options because the three course meals are as beautiful as they are delicious. Most of the meals comes from their organic garden so I never got sick eating their fresh fruits or vegetables. There is plenty to do at Cusin with children and adults. We played ping pong, chess and fuss ball. The gardens are extraordinary and the gardeners love telling you about what they are growing. I set up a scavenger hunt in gardens of the monastery and the gardeners had so much fun setting it up with me, My teenage daughter and her cousins thoroughly enjoyed finding the secret door there. After a wonderful day of hiking and visiting rural villages, we would come back to our room where a fire had been started in the fireplace and hot water bottles had been put beneath the sheets. I even came in one evening when dozens of white roses decorated our Duenita Suite. We stayed at Cusin in 2003 and now wondered why we took so long to come back. We can’t wait to return. This place offers so much for the price you pay which is much lower than most 5 star hotels. Thank you Cusin for all you did to make our trip to Ecuador so magical and meaningful,

My partner and I hosted a wedding of approximately 70 guests at the hacienda. With our guests, we stayed at the hacienda for one week leading up to the big day. Hacienda Cusin is an hour and half from Quito and it is your very own oasis tucked away from the city amongst vast mountains. From the second stepped onto the property, we were completely blown away! The gardens boast incredible beauty through unique flowers and farmed vegetables. There’s acres of land to explore, and horses as well as llamas to follow. There’s basketball courts, squash, a game room with pool table and ping pong. There’s a library and a bar. The food was some of the best- fresh and delicious with an incredible, thought-out, presentation each meal. The caring staffs’ hospitality is unmatched- anything we needed, they were there. They cleaned our rooms daily, lit our fireplaces, kept the bar open late, packed to-go breakfast on our early morning days and so much more. Lastly, Valeria Davila, our event coordinator, is angel sent. Her attention to detail is impeccable. She is kind and caring and ever so patient. She worked with us for over a year and made sure our wedding was a dream come true!

Amazing experience! We went for a friend’s wedding and everything was so lovely. From the artisan food to the wonderful staff. It was a lovely getaway to unplug (although there is Wi-Fi) and connect with friends! If you’re looking for a long stay or quick stop over, this is the place to be!

We visited Hacienda Cusin for a destination wedding and could not have been more impressed. Hacienda staff and management were extremely kind, responsive, and the pictures attached don't really do Hacienda Cusin much justice. If you plan on visiting Ecuador, or South America, I would highly recommend staying at Hacienda Cusin. While you're there have Enrique or Ramon make you one of their delicious drinks or cappuccino while you take in the view of the surrounding mountains. I really can't say enough about what a great experience it was to visit, from their traditional Ecuadorian lunch and dinner served daily to your fireplace being lit for you every night of your stay. Need your clothes cleaned while you're there...no problem. Need your suit or dress pressed for a night out....no problem. Want to feed an alpaca some carrots...no problem! Wonderful staff, wonderful experience and wonderful Ecuadorian people.
