#1 & only recommended stay in the Douro Valley (in my opinion)! Hopefully that got your attention because no further search on where to stay in the valley is needed. Mark my words, this will be one of the BEST and most memorable parts of your trip. Where do I even start? The casa itself is a MASTERPIECE, a true piece of art (the story of how it got built is also charming but you’ll have to book your stay to find out!). The rooms are all surrounded by ceiling high windows with the magnificent view of the valley. The staff is top notch and the most caring/welcoming we’ve ever encountered (and we have traveled a lot). The food is impeccable and simply the most delicious we had during our stay. An added bonus is that the owners of this casa also own a tour company called: The Douro Exclusive. This tour along with the casa is family owned/run which makes it that much more special. The family are natives to the surrounding areas of the valley and Portugal — the amount of history and knowledge they know about it all is extremely impressive. Even if you aren’t staying at the casa, book your tour with Douro Exclusive to have the most amazing, authentic and genuine day than any other tour could offer. Words and reviews are simply not enough for this stay and tour but we would like to end this note with gratitude and absolute love for our entire experience and stay. We truly felt so special and at home. This should 100% be considered a 5-star stay. If you are truly seeking that authentic and genuine experience — please do yourself a favor and pick CASA DO ARCO. You will not regret it!

When we arrived we were given room 201. This was a standard room and in accordance with our booking (booked via a travel agency in connection with our hiking week in the Douro Valley). The room was OK albeit a little dark. No balcony, but only few rooms at the Pousada have one. So not unexpected. But upon enquiry with reception for an extra charge of 10 Euro a night we got room 104, which was a much bigger room, with a lot of character, and probably with the best balcony of all the rooms. It made our stay so much more enjoyable. The shower was a little strange, but it worked, and the towels were really big (always a plus in my book). We stayed two nights and had dinner in the restaurant one of the nights. Excellent food and really good and professional service – and very reasonably priced. Smooth check-in, very friendly reception staff. Our booking included lunch packages for our hikes each day, and these were very nice and included plastic containers with a nice fresh salat. Much appreciated. This hotel was the only one during our hiking week that provided paper tissues. The only thing we missed in the room was an electric kettle.

Perfect

GGuest User#1 & only recommended stay in the Douro Valley (in my opinion)! Hopefully that got your attention because no further search on where to stay in the valley is needed. Mark my words, this will be one of the BEST and most memorable parts of your trip. Where do I even start? The casa itself is a MASTERPIECE, a true piece of art (the story of how it got built is also charming but you’ll have to book your stay to find out!). The rooms are all surrounded by ceiling high windows with the magnificent view of the valley. The staff is top notch and the most caring/welcoming we’ve ever encountered (and we have traveled a lot). The food is impeccable and simply the most delicious we had during our stay. An added bonus is that the owners of this casa also own a tour company called: The Douro Exclusive. This tour along with the casa is family owned/run which makes it that much more special. The family are natives to the surrounding areas of the valley and Portugal — the amount of history and knowledge they know about it all is extremely impressive. Even if you aren’t staying at the casa, book your tour with Douro Exclusive to have the most amazing, authentic and genuine day than any other tour could offer. Words and reviews are simply not enough for this stay and tour but we would like to end this note with gratitude and absolute love for our entire experience and stay. We truly felt so special and at home. This should 100% be considered a 5-star stay. If you are truly seeking that authentic and genuine experience — please do yourself a favor and pick CASA DO ARCO. You will not regret it!

GGuest UserThe location, the view is beautiful. The rooms are attractive and comfortable. I wish the service and hospitality matched. Not welcoming, not relaxed- almost seemed protective of their property to the point as though they wished they didn't have to share their family operation. Here a few examples: We had two groups traveling, staying in 3 separate rooms. We had restaurant reservations booked 6 months in advance. I received an email before our trip which questioned our restaurant reservation for 6 and didn't I know that it was only 2 to a room. I found that odd and a bit annoying-- I did reply and gave all the information they needed as to the other party and told them we were related and that I was well aware that there were only accommodations for 2 to a room. I didn't realize that this wasn't a one time experience in how they handle communication. There was a luggage room open and an young girl standing by the door. I asked if they stored luggage, her response was ”Sometimes.” ( what does that mean?) The other party we were with described the check in experience as 'fussy' ( our experience as well) and the restaurant evening was some of the worst service he has experienced. The long awaited dinner meal was a mixed experience. We had made reservations 6 months in advance requesting a view. When it was clear we were going to be seated in the back one of the people in our party motioned to the areas a little closer to the windows. The manager in a very abrupt manner said No! there is nothing available. Maybe so but there are so many other ways to say that. How about first off ”Welcome to our restaurant...” The food was very good. However, the back of the house does not match the front of the house. Orders were mixed up, The service was slow, not attentive and at one point they forgot to even come back and take our dessert order. By the time they did, there was only one person that was interested anymore. They didn't split the checks as promised and when the we talked to the mgr. he seemed annoyed and didn't want to correct it so we didn't pursue it any further. The breakfast experience was odd as well. Instead of a welcome, it was where are you staying? I happened to notice he was holding an egg. That was my only tip off that there were eggs. I ordered scrambled eggs. On view there was a nice assortment of breads, fruit and cheeses. The rest of the party were finishing their food and would have liked to have ordered eggs if they had been offered or informed . Lack of communication, lack of hospitality.
