The reception desk closes early, so if you are planning to arrive late, please check in advance how to receive the key (collect from the locker near the entrance using a PIN number). My bus arrived late and the reception desk was closed, so I called without any prior notice, and luckily a Japanese staff member answered and helped me. The inn can be noisy when used by groups such as school trips, but the space in the detached building where I stayed was comfortable. The kitchen is spacious and easy to use, so I recommend it for long-term stays.

I don't like everything except that it's close to downtown Rotorua and the price is cheap. Check-in is only accepted until 5pm What do you mean, tell me to take it out on my own without giving you the password? Even during remodeling work lol. No, if you have a conscience, you should take reservations excluding buildings under construction.

The front desk is very welcoming. Service hours are limited but very cost-effective. It is a ten-minute walk from the city center.

We enjoy the stay in Haka Rotorua so much! Room and facilities are clean and handy. What make them distinguishing is the warm and hospitality staff. Special thank to the staff - Ayush Chandra, who warmly helped us in local tour booking, shared his expereinces, and is very considerate in details that a treveler might occur. Thanks to Haka House Rotorua, we had a great time there.

It didn't start well - my room was next to the night gate whose keycard lock is kaput and if it was not closed carefully it closed with a clang. My phone call to the night manager (reception closes early) to change rooms was ignored. But next morning the front desk staff was most helpful in changing my room to a quieter one. Avoid rooms 11 and 12 if you can. The hostel itself is modern, well set up and well located. The kitchen is spacious and well equipped. The dorms are small but the ensuite facilities are good. The bunks are comfortable and come with a reading light and privacy curtains. The hostel is located a few blocks from the tourist center around the lake shore and from the supermarket in the Central Mall. It is also just across the road from Kuirau Park, a geothermal area in the heart of Rotorua. Relax and soak your feet in the thermal footbath. Parking was not a problem. Haupapa Street outside the hostel has metered parking from 9 to 5 Mon to Fri and 9 to 12 Sat. Outside those hours parking is free and unrestricted. Across Ranolf Street on the edge of Kuirau Park there is unrestricted free parking at all times - get in early to claim a spot. Hostel staff also told me that they have off-street parking for $15 a night. Security is not great - the broken gate lock means that the common areas are open to anyone, but the rooms are secured by keycard locks.

Very small room but comfortable. Very noisy when people were congregating in the courtyard or by the gate (which kept banging loudly all night when people came through, which wasn't much fun). Unpleasant smell came up from the shower after using. Free parking outside the hostel was very handy.

Our room didn’t lock and was told it couldn’t be sorted until Monday which is really helpful considering that’s the day we were checking-out. On top of that they leave the front gate purposefully unlocked so anyone could come in and out of the hotel adding to our worries of leaving our things in the room. Staff were also very unhelpful and conveniently didn’t know when the public parking right outside the building was free, probably so we’d have to pay for their parking which is a hidden fee they don’t tell you about until you’re there. Every time we walked past reception a different guest was being told the same misinformation about parking so they must know as guests are often asking about it. The room is an absolute hot box and you simply can’t be in there during the day because it’s swelteringly hot with little air coming through even with the windows open. Some positives is that the kitchen facilities were good and the location is in a good spot for walking into town. Very disappointing stay and if we had more of a budget then we would’ve stayed somewhere else.
