Schloss Matzen

We were already guests at Schloss Matzen in October 2019 and wanted to repeat the great castle experience on our honeymoon in October 2022. We booked a superior room through an external booking site and asked in advance if it was possible to get our 2019 room. This was declined as we had not booked directly through the hotel and the superior room we requested was not available for guests on the external booking site. This surprised us, since we had also booked through this external booking site in 2019, but we were not yet suspicious. Unfortunately, we had to realize on site that the hotel and the service had suffered significantly during the pandemic. The service staff tries hard, but cannot match the old quality. The reception is only very sporadically manned, it seems as if there is usually only one employee on site who is then on the move throughout the castle, so that there is no employee at the reception when you need him. Our first room was under the roof. Being pregnant I found it very difficult to climb the stairs to the roof, so we asked for a new room. The room exchange was only exceptionally possible, which was repeatedly and clearly pointed out. As part of the room exchange, it was also pointed out that not all rooms in the superior category were available for us, as we had booked through an external booking site. You get the feeling that as a guest you are “2. Class" is treated if you do not book the room directly on the hotel website. The WLAN in our new room did not work, which unfortunately we could only complain about by telephone, since we did not find anyone at the reception at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. Unfortunately, the problem could not be solved because, according to the employee, our new room is the only room in the hotel where the WiFi signal does not arrive due to the thick castle walls. It should be emphasized that the rooms and bathrooms are very clean and well-kept. One of the service employees asked us to switch from German to English because she still had difficulties with the German language. It was not a problem for us to communicate in English, but in a hotel in Tyrol this request was a bit strange. Despite the bright sunshine and 20°C, the former sun terrace was no longer furnished, which is a pity, since you could comfortably sit in the sun here before the pandemic. Now the only thing left is the seating in the castle courtyard, which is in the shade. In addition, there is actually a direct passage to the café and restaurant Gut Matzen. Unfortunately, the door is now locked, but unfortunately you can only find this out shortly before you reach your destination, so that you then have to go back to the hotel and go around to the café.
