We had seen a TV programme about the award-winning cuisine at Villa Melsheimer. What we were shown there led us to decide to go there in the summer and combine cycling trips along the Moselle with the gastronomic highlights of Melsheimer. We booked half board, but what was on offer in the evening was canteen food served under a silver toque. We immediately switched to the à la carte restaurant. The menu was striking, with a price gap in the 30 euro range. No beef steak, no salad and basically no seasonal vegetables. A soup made from heirloom carrots flashed a little of the shine that we had seen on TV. We also had pork loin with cheeks and risotto with chanterelles. It was served without a word, without cheeks, and the chanterelles were just parts that didn't belong there. The day before, we had been told that a wedding was taking place in the house. It was quite something. Loud music until 12:40 am. After that, an intoxicated person started shouting and causing a disturbance in front of our door and kicked in a room door. We are experienced enough to avoid a wedding, if only we had been told (warned). The division into two restaurants with different kitchen days and times is also clever. The moderately priced kitchen is only available on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. On Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays it closes at 5:30 pm. Even in the high-priced kitchen, there was no seasonal chanterelle menu. There were no salads, which you would have liked to have as a starter in midsummer. The hotel is also rated 4 stars, which I cannot understand.
