This place has great potential--really good bones, as they say--but it needs some improvement to score top ratings. This was an abandoned motel that an investment firm purchased and renovated. At present, it's one of the more affordable lodgings in the Watkins Glen area. The rooms are a comfortable size, and each is graced with a private balcony overlooking the southwest part of the lake. They designate a parking spot for each room, so loading luggage is made easy. They've done a fine job of hiring staff--every one was quite helpful. State Route 14 carries a lot of truck traffic, and the speed limit decreases just past the hotel, so there's a lot of engine braking. But the rooms are half-way down the hill--accessible down a curing driveway reminiscent of San Francisco's hills--so the truck noise is greatrly reduced. The negatives here have to do with furnishings and finishes in the room. Our bathroom door was a very tight fit and took a good shove in order to close it all the way. Hot water took several minutes to flow from the water heater to the bathroom. It would also be nice to have some shelf space in the bathroom--the edges of the sink didn't quite hold our travel toiletries. The room contains a nice comfy bed, hotel-style dresser, fridge and microwave, and a dining table with one chair and a hard bench seat--more comfortable seating would be great, and a desk or two for us computer nerds would be welcome. The one inexcusable feature for me was the shower. They've decided to enclose it halfway with glass, which seems to be a fad among designers recently. It's just wrong-headed--showers splash, and if you don't have a full enclosure the floor gets wet. I injured my knee once when I slipped and fell due to a wet floor from an enclosure like that. Please install doors! My take-away here is that they've started a good job of renovation and re-establishing this as a fine place to stay in Watkins Glen.
