Plaza Grande Hotel

Quito|0.23km from Quito Old Town
We spent two days in Quito following our Galapagos cruise and booked this very expensive hotel as a splurge to end our vacation. On the plus side, it is very beautifully decorated, our room was quite large and there were lots of fluffy towels and nice toiletries. We received a bottle of wine and some chocolate when we checked in, and the people at the front desk were very nice. But the negatives certainly overshadowed the positives, considering how much we paid for the room. The air conditioner was barely adequate, although we turned it down as low as possible, so we spent two uncomfortable nights. One of the main reasons for booking the hotel was to eat in their lovely restaurant, We even thought we made a reservation for our first night. However. when we checked in , we discovered that the restaurant had been closed for months and the only available restaurant was little better than a coffee shop, although they did serve dinners. The breakfast that was included in the room rate was very limited, with most of the other offerings an additional cost. Even at more modest hotels, we have enjoyed very nice buffets with many choices, but not at this hotel. And finally, our trip ended on a very negative note. The hotel is on a pedestrian street so we, with all of our luggage, walked to the corner with the bellman to meet our car. He didn't have a cart so we carried everything. While we were standing there someone took one of our bags, unfortunately the one with the presents we were bringing home to our family. The hotel never bothered to get in touch with me afterwards, although I guess technically it was not entirely their fault, even though they walk guests to the corner on a regular basis. But an expression of regret would have been appropriate and much appreciated. I really intended to give the hotel a “poor” rating, but decided in the end for “average” but only because the people at the front desk were so pleasant. But we would never recommend this hotel to anyone.

Hilton Colon Quito

Quito|2.38km from Quito Old Town
First of all, the Hilton Colon - like most Hiltons outside the U.S. - is far superior to equivalent Hilton properties in the States. Relatively clean rooms (no stray hairs anywhere!), comfortable bed, great shower water pressure, clean towels, nice and cozy executive lounge, etc. The room, and the property in general, is dated but things mostly work as they should. In the Southwest facing ”executive” king room, and in the executive lounge, the views of the city are spectacular. Unfortunately, the ”free” breakfast buffet is slop, with the most atrocious coffee in Quito. The exception is the made-to-order egg station and the nice gentleman who expertly cooks them. Bring your own coffee from one of the countless cafes nearby and then order just the eggs and some toast. Or, better yet, get an authentic Ecuadorian breakfast elsewhere for just a few dollars. There was extensive road construction going on during my stay on Avenida Patria, which is the main road adjacent to the South side of the property. Very loud during the day, and bright spot-lights aimed at the hotel were left on during the night for some perplexing reason. Not the hotel's fault, of course - just something to be aware of if planning to stay here in the near future. Lastly, the front desk receptionists at this hotel reminded me of the female customs agents at Quito airport. Not friendly for sure, and rather stern. On the other hand, many other staff members, housekeeping in particular, were kind and helpful. Would I stay here again? I think so, once the road construction is completed.

Casa Alquimia

I arrived in Quito a few days before an organized birding trip, and am so glad I booked at Casa Alquimia. The location was perfect for exploring the Centro Historico, and the hotel itself was a delight. It’s in a historic building that’s been thoughtfully renovated. My room was spacious and immaculately clean. The bed was comfortable, with enough pillows even for this pillow fiend, and the duvet kept me toasty warm through the cool Quito nights. Breakfasts were ample and delicious (REALLY delicious), eaten on an enclosed terrace with a spectacular view of El Panecillo. But the best part was the warm, welcoming attention from the owners and staff. A few additional notes, in response to common questions/concerns. There was plenty of hot water for showers (you do have to let it run for a few minutes to warm up). Purified drinking water was provided. The hotel accepts credit cards, but cash is preferred. As for safety in Centro - I took basic precautions, asked for advice from my hosts if I was uncertain, and had no problems. I will return here in a heartbeat at the next opportunity, which I hope comes soon!

My oasis in this city, with perfect location in the historic center, a rooftop terrace with amazing views and a welcoming, helpful staff. The hostel has a colonial feel to it and is very clean. Flowers everywhere! A great breakfast with a smoothie, an omelette, a cheese sandwich and a coffee. Quiet and peaceful, very safe.

We stayed three nights here, at the start of a month's trip to Ecuador. The hotel is characterful and spacious, although could be described as a bit run down in places. Our room was quite large and perfectly nice but lacked an outside window and the bed creaked. The shower was adequate although the flow was a bit weak and hot water took a while to come through to it and the taps. No safe in the room. Breakfast was quite simple but very nice and served in a dining area with good views of the city. The staff were very friendly and helpful with a good sense of customer service (after there was a bit of a mix up over our departure date, Alexander left a very friendly note of apology in our room). WiFi was fine. The location is very convenient for the Old Town, just a few minutes' walk from shops, restaurants, attractions etc and there is a cheap laundry almost next door. The hotel arranged our taxi from the airport and this went smoothly. Overall we felt this was a good option if you want to be close to the Old Town.

No air conditioning, so no heating, the quilt is too thin, the bed cover is a blanket, too heavy, a series of operations that I don't understand? Maybe it's for a strong or fat person to sleep. The rooftop scenery is beautiful, you can go up and see. Is it really unthinkable that there are no slippers? It's better to live in a Chinese homestay (。_í。) The price/performance ratio feels quite average I think 200 RMB is the best. It is worthy of praise: the friend's mobile phone fell into the taxi, the handsome guy at the front desk worked very hard to actively help find someone, chase the phone, thank you very much In addition, remember to tip your babies when you go out.
