Staying at Morgadio da Calcada is a magical experience. The landscape, the village, manor house and guestrooms are each in their own way absolutely beautiful. So many highlights but the wonderful staff are definately at the top of my list. Our host Daniella could not have been more kind and caring.

We booked the Nogueiras premier double room. This is located at the rear of the main property with the room opening out onto the vineyards and nearby swimming pool. The room was of a good size and comfortable. More or less as described in the on-line sites. Good AC and WiFi. A good breakfast is offered. There is also the option of dining-in together with a wine tasting of the wines produced by Morgadio da Calcada - this we did. The diner was fabulous with the dishes presented and explained by the chef. Ditto the wines which were presented by the owner. Well worth the additional cost. There are several hectares of vineyards at the property with open access to guests. Great to stroll through on those warm balmy afternoons. We did not get to use the outdoor swimming pool as the weather was cool and somewhat changeable at the time of our visit. There is free off-road parking for guests. The property is located on the outskirts of Provesende, a small village to the north of Pinhão and the eastern Douro valley. This is the heart of Port and the Douro wine region. Provesende is a great base if you plan to visit this region of Portugal. One note of warning: The property does not accept credit card payments. This came as a bit of a surprise as my booking was made through one of the larger hotel booking organisations which take your credit card details as a booking guarantee. Payment by cash or with bank-approved cards are accepted. We would not hesitate returning again if visiting this region of Portugal in the future.

From the moment of arrival to our departure, our stay at Morgadio da Calçada was unique. The attention to detail and the professionalism of the staff, particularly Daniela, made every moment memorable. The warmth and genuine concern for our well-being were ever-present, creating a welcoming and personalized atmosphere. The wine dinner was very good, perfectly paired with a selection of local wines and the gastronomic richness of the Douro region. The three nights spent were a true delight. The comfort and cleanliness of the rooms, along with the serenity of the surroundings (vineyards, pool) and the beautiful village of Provesende made everything very special. Big thank you to Manuel Villas-Boas, the host who makes Morgadio da Calçada a welcoming and fantastic place. In summary, the experience was divine and left a lasting impression: we are surely returning soon!

Attention to detail. The owner was very hands on and clearly good at what he offered. We loved the simple simplicity - every thing he offered was done well and with class. Rooms were Uber clean and different - bathrooms were great. Breakfast was great and well thought out - simple pleasures - nice food in a beautiful and sympathetically renovated room - pretty bowls etc. Skimming pool are was simple but private and elegant. Would stay again for sure - wish we had time to have carried on the stay. Restaurants are a bit sparse in the area, but Available 20 mins away.

Lovely experience. Immaculately clean, fresh rooms. Nice breeze at the top of a hill under the trees, so the heat did not become too much. Great breakfast - the warm fresh country bred was divine! The dinners they provided for guests were also really nice. The service was just unbelievably good and personal. Would definitely want to come back

We randomly picked this hotel and are so pleased. A very warm welcome, an historic house, wonderfully quiet, an amazing chef and hosted by Manuel the son of the owner but what a brilliant host - his knowledge of the wine and port trade and his charm in showing us their beautiful house are a credit to his parents. Cannot recommend it highly enough and we are sure it will continue to be a great place to stay for many years to come!

You wouldn’t know from the outside gate, but once you’re inside, it is a small charming inn set on acres of vineyards. The owner,Manuel was gracious and patient in answering all our questions about the history of the place. I loved the cook to order eggs for breakfast and the fresh squeezed orange juice.

Provesende is an interesting village in the hills above Pinhau. It used to be the haunt of the rich and nobility with many fine houses but now most are deserted. Morgadio da Calcada has been in the same family for centuries and quite recently decided to expand from just wine into the tourist business by converting a couple of outbuildings into eight hotel rooms. This has been interestingly done but with some problems: The bedrooms are small and with no desk or shelving so nowhere to put books or papers, the water took four minutes to run hot, we could not operate the television, although later told that we should have used two controllers! There is a communal sitting and dining room in the old house, attractive and with a log fire. Breakfast was excellent with fresh scrambled eggs and a decent choice considering that we were the only two guests. However at €121 for b&b we felt this was a bit expensive for the standard of bedroom.

Our travel consultant, Tour Tailors, booked us into Morgadio da Calcana for two nights of a 14 night, you-drive, independent tour of Portugal. Of all the very nice hotels we stayed at, this stood out as our most memorable. This is a small, boutique hotel with a handful of modern, sparsely decorated but elegant en suite guest rooms created out of the stone sheds and out buildings of the main manor house with its 20’ high ceilings that dates back to this family’s original ownership in 1610. What made this so special for us was the personal involvement of the owner, Manuel and his daughter and sons, the totally relaxing atmosphere of the Morgadio da Calcana vineyards that surround you, and the superb candlelight, four course dinners with wonderfully paired ports and wine (which you can buy and have shipped home) from their very own grapes. It was a little hard to find as it is way up in the hills above the Douro Valley, but the drive there was incredibly beautiful. On arrival, once you locate the inauspicious doorway (it took us almost 10 minutes to locate it) and step through the beamed portal, you enter another world. You won’t be sharing this secret with a bus load of tourists. This is a special place that you should go out of your way to experience.
