Martin Hill Inn

Stayed in the NoonDay Suite, it was fabulous, so clean, bed so comfortable, so spacious, and grounds are beautiful. We will definitely be staying here again. Lindsay (Manager), was extremely accommodating and made such amazing recommendations as we were new to traveling to the Portsmouth/Kittery Maine area.

The room looked just like the pictures! Bed and pillows were so comfortable!! Location was a 10-15 minute walking distance to downtown. I liked being a little further away from all of the hustle and bustle. Garden was absolutely beautiful. There's plenty of places to sit out there and enjoy your morning coffee! I cant wait to come back here again!

My family and I stayed at the Martin Hill in this summer when visiting my parents in Portsmouth. This Inn was the exact balance of luxury, comfort, beauty, and down-to-earth charm. The rooms were spotless, fresh, and had everything we needed. It was lovely to be able to sit in the beautiful gardens. We returned a few weeks later under the difficult conditions of my father's final days. The staff at the Inn were more than accommodating with our last minute requests and the changes we had to make as our plans changed. It was such a relief to be in such a peaceful environment where things were taken care of so effortlessly. We are grateful for that experienced during this difficult time.

The customer service was impeccable. Very responsive if I needed anything at all! The room was gorgeous and clean! Very quiet and relaxing. Parking was easy to find. Close to downtown. The garden was beautiful!! 6/5 stars. Thank you so much!

Our two night get-away to the Martin Hill Inn was a great way to decompress! We stayed in the Noonday Suite and the accommodations could not have been nicer - comfortable, clean and nicely decorated. The garden area was perfect for reading or a quick cat nap. The location was great as well, an easy walk into town for dinner, shopping or a sunset cruise. Definitely on our list of places to return to.

Cozy bed and breakfast. It was in a great location. Room was very comfortable and cozy. The inn keepers were very hospitable and went out of their way for their customers. We enjoyed the coffee bar, complimentary cookies and sherry. Nice little touches that go a long way. Breakfast was very good! We had a yogurt parfait then a potato and leek quiche. The breakfast concluded with banana bread. There were excellent juices and coffee as well. We would definitely return here again!

The Martin Hill Inn has a lot going for it. Our room was spotless and very tastefully arranged. The garden is a delight - we spent all our down time out there enjoying the flowers, birds, fresh air and quiet. It is convenient to the downtown area IF you like to walk - the web site said a 10 minute walk but for us it was more like 20ish. There were a couple of nice places to eat right nearby, and of course great restaurants in the Market Square area. And on Saturday evening we were very happy to retreat to our sweet inn and escape from the noise and crowds. As stated on their web site, the stairs to the second floor of the main building are extremely steep, and also kind of twisty, Pretty typical for older New England houses, but definitely not appropriate for people with mobility concerns. That said, there were a few details that could have been better. The main issue is that there really isn't any staff present on site, beyond the housekeeper. I would normally expect an inn to have a desk or someone whom you can ask if you have a question. At the Martin Hill, you're supposed to call them if you have concerns, which just felt weird. (We had a few exchanges about early checkin which worked out fine, but it did require a couple of rounds.). Similarly, the inn provided very little information: the booklet in the room was pretty generic, and didn't include things like restaurant recommendations (the link on their web site was broken when I looked) or the phone numbers of taxi services. Our room didn't have a bureau - no drawers to unpack our clothes into. Finally, housekeeping service was not provided in the morning. I understand that many guest houses don't provide fresh towels, etc., every day, but in this case it was pretty challenging to find places to hang two bath towels. No, none of this is the end of the world - we found a taxi, we found great restaurants, we didn't mind living out of our suitcases, we draped the towels over the doors and they did dry, and we LOVED our time in Portsmouth. I'd even stay at Martin Hill again, but if I go back to Portsmouth I'd probably look at some other alternatives too.

We loved our stay at the Martin Hill Inn! Contactless check-in was easy and we had no issues finding the parking lot (the free off-street parking was great!) or finding and accessing our room. The room was perfect with the coastal New England style; modern yet still maintaining the character of the old house and impeccably clean! The quiet location was great for a couples trip while still being walkable to downtown as well as to restaurants and breweries a bit closer.

A very charming and quaint inn that is convenient to all the restaurants and shops in Portsmouth. Free parking that is on their premises. (Parking in Portsmouth is extremely expensive). We stayed in the Noonsday suite and it was lovely. We had our own private screened- in porch, comfortable sitting area in our room, the beds were comfy as well. Would recommend to anyone who wants to experience something truly amazing. Can’t wait to go back in the spring to see the beautiful landscape/flowers. Most important, it was affordable!
