Inn at St John Portland in-Town

Portland|2.69km from Tate House Museum
We were visting from NYC, where we are used to high hotel prices, but we were astonished by the prices in Portland last weekend--including at the Inn at St. John. The Inn is located across from Maine Medical Center--it's construction Zone, actually. It is a short run/walk to the Western Promenade, which is very beautiful and worth the climb. However, it is not really near any other real attractions of the city. Our room (double with private bath) was very small and dated (it is an historic inn, so I don't mind the antique furnishings...everything was just a little on the shabby side). However, it was very clean. Bath could use some updating as well. The ”closet” had hardly any space to hang clothes. There was a table and chairs, and a chest of drawers, which was great. Continental breakfast was fine but average--hard-boiled eggs, cereal, store-bought muffins, etc. You're better off walking over to Holy Donuts and standing in line for their treats. All-day coffee/tea and snacks are a nice touch, however. Also, there was no maid service at all--no towel exchange or tidying up the room. Our check-in staff on Friday were extremely helpful and friendly; kudos to them for helping my husband up the stairs with his luggage. Other staff were also friendly, although we didn't have much interaction with them. We just expected a bit more of a homey atmosphere and a bit more comfort in our surroundings for the price.

Not worth the money they charge. The gentleman at the front desk did not seem to like or know his job his job. He made errors at check in by. Hanging the wrong credit card, never sent luggage to the room and did not seem to care in the least each time we tried to get the situation rectified. At checkout we were mistakenly charged for a meal. There was total confusion on the hotels part to resolve. Spoke to the front desk manager at the time of checkout, called and spoke to Pat the front desk manager a few day later. He told me he would look into the charges and call me back that same day, he never returned my call. Call a few day later and asked for the hotel manager, Micheal, explained the situation about the incorrectly charged meal. He said he would look into it and call me it two days, he never returned the call as he said he would. Had to call the hotel again, no more than a week later. Spoke to another manager who said he figured out the issue and credited my credit card a few days earlier. Still have not seen the credit. Not impressed with the service at all. Anyone can make a mistake in a bill but it is how it is dealt with that determines the customers experience. The managers at this hotel don’t seem to understand customer service. Very surprising but true.

We stayed one night before flying home after a family event. We ran out of wipes for the 1 year old and the staff put our Uber CVS order in the room for us. They also provided a travel crib. Then, my 5 year old started vomiting in the middle of the night and the front desk staff provided us with extra linens not once, but TWICE. The service from start to finish was amazing and I will definitely stay here again when visiting Portland. Oh yeah- rooms large and clean, good breakfast, great downtown location!

Great location tho it wasn't situation in the heart of downtown. Clean and bright room. Due to the covid the housekeeping service wasn't delivered during the 3 nights we stayed. The price was extremely expensive (actually all hotels in the whole Portland). Anyhow, great spacious room and I had a pleasant stay.

We made a last minute decision to take a trip from the NYC area up to Portland to attend an event, and with Labor Day weekend traffic, we did not arrive until about 11:30PM at night with 3 exhausted kids. We were pleasantly surprised with this hotel -- the kids slept in the bedroom and my husband and I slept on the pull-out couch in the living room area of the suite. I was anticipating noise because of the proximity to the airport, but we never heard a single plane! When we requested extra towels, pillows, blankets, etc they were brought up in a timely fashion by a friendly and helpful staff member. The included breakfast was a really nice perk -- everyone had plenty of options (one of our travel companions is vegan and had options). My husband in particular enjoyed the freshly made omlets.

We were very comfortable in our deluxe waterview room for three nights. The room was clean and spacious with nice bedding and giant windows that allowed us to enjoy the activity around the port. We were a little apprehensive about the lively crowd and the loud music across the street on our first night, but at 10:00 p.m. all was quiet. However, with parking and the cost of breakfast, we paid over $1500 for those three nights. Even with the great location and the view, that was well beyond anything we've paid before--anywhere.
