We went on a trip to Plitvica National Park with three, my wife, my six-year-old daughter and myself. The park itself is beautiful and very well organized and customer-friendly. Our B&B was also excellent, but in the evening we went to eat in restaurants in the area. That is how we ended up at Plitvica Lodge because of the good reviews. Was that a horrible experience! We hadn't even sat down before the owner came and poured us several glasses of self-distilled alcohol without asking. Out of courtesy I finished one glass but when he kept pouring I got a little uncomfortable and I left the rest. When I asked to see the menu he simply said we could choose from a fish grill or a meat dish. The fish was trout and we didn't like that so we opted for two dishes with meat. Our daughter would eat with us. The meat was undercooked and the potatoes and vegetables were floating in fat. My daughter couldn't eat a bite and we had enough quickly. I asked for the bill and then he came with a very sweet cake that we didn't like either. I asked again for the bill but he kept procrastinating and came back with his home made gin which we again refused. After much insistence and because I had already put on my coat, I finally got the bill: 1 apple juice: 3 €, 1 liter of sparkling water in a plastic bottle of the cheapest brand: 5 €, 2 dishes of the day: 2 x 30 €. I said that this was way overpriced and that it was twice as much as in the other restaurants in the area and even more expensive than in Belgium, which is the truth. I also told him to tell people in advance how much his food cost. He got angry and refused to take anything off the price. I paid him then because I had been so stupid not to ask the price in advance, but I still think this is below par. I have been going on holiday to Croatia for over ten years and have had mostly good experiences. I have never experienced such a rip off as in Plitvica Lodge. From now on I'm going to be more careful when visiting a restaurant for the first time.
