Columbia Beach Resort

The staff are fantastic, all very efficient and friendly; they all do a great job. The swimming pools are very nice, both indoor and outdoor. It is a large resort and it was not full when we visited so it felt peaceful, I am not sure how that would compare to peak season. The main reason for my low rating is that I booked a junior suite months in advance and specifically asked for a quiet room. We were assigned a room above the kitchen (noisy and smelly), next to the tavern restaurant and to the noisy generator/pool engine (or whatever it is, but very noisy all day and night). The window also faced the busy stairs that lead to the restaurant and beach....so not my idea of quiet at all. The decor is dated but that could be acceptable. The bed (king bed made up as two singles pushed together with 2 sets of duvets) had a very uncomfortable mattress and the pillows were lumpy. This is not acceptable in a high starred hotel, in my opinion. When I mentioned this at check out, the lady suggested that next time I book a more expensive suite.... We had one dinner at the restaurant and while the food was good, it was extremely expensive for what if was. Breakfast was good, nothing special. On a bright note they seem to have adopted a large number of cats and they seem to take good care of them.
Hylatio Tourist Village
4.1/548 Reviews
Pros: 1. Very pleasant and picturesque pool areas and grounds. 2. Good selection of drinks on offer (we went all inclusive and menu included cocktails). 3. Food was good and varied (including a Chinese night which was delicious) 4. Close to Paphos - only around 30 minute drive 5. Pool table and Table football for the kids (although only 1 of each so some waiting to get on). 6. Rooms were cleaned regularly and sheets changed etc. Cons: 1. Room was very dated and in desperate need of modernization. We stayed in a split level apartment. The bathroom was moldy and smelt pretty bad. The banister was wobbly and held on by a small L bracket which was dangerous. Kitchenette smelt old and had handles of doors falling off. Luckily we were all inclusive so we didn't have to cook and eat there. 2. The staff were super rude. I am not exaggerating here either. The night we checked in (around 1am) we had to walk to the bar area to find a member of staff. He wasn't smiley, didn't 'welcome' us to the Hylatio, he simply handed us our keys and walked us to our room. Also, almost every time we went to the bar to get a drink no matter what time of day, the staff (mainly the men) seemed to be put out or annoyed by the fact we were asking for drinks and seemed so unwelcoming. The woman servers on the other hand seemed much nicer. I think the bar staff need some lessons in customer service. Having spoken to a few other families staying there, they had the same opinion. 3. Location: Although being near a beach and small shop, there isn't much else around so I would suggest hiring a car. We managed to hire one from the hotel reception desk at a price of €45 per day for 3 days which enabled us to go to Paphos, Trudos mountains etc. 4. Checkout is at 11am, so if you don't manage to have a late checkout but have a late pick up, you will swelter in the reception waiting area. There seemed to be no aircon there. Obviously, you could go to the outside bar area and they had fans there which was a welcome relief. 5. The pool, although tidy, large and picturesque for some reason kept giving people ear infections. My 8 year old daughter caught one after day 3 and having discussed with other guests, there were at least 8-10 other people (adults and kids) who had ear infections from the pool. We had to resort to driving up to the local pharmacy which was only a 5 minute drive away to get some drops for her ears and this luckily cleared it up. 6. Pool shower room was very dirty and not somewhere i think anyone wanted to shower or use (again an opinion shared with other guests). 7. The sofa bed in our apartment was like sleeping on a concrete block. The kids had the bedroom with 2 singled beds so we obviously had to use the sofa bed, but it was one of the most uncomfortable things we have ever slept on. Maybe they could offer some extra duvets to pad it out a bit. 8. Sun bed wars - Unless you want to get up between 4-5am to get a sunbed, don't expect to use one. Although, they do
