The room is nice. It would be nice if the bathroom could be in the room, otherwise it would be very inconvenient. It is very quiet at night, but at the same time it seems that the sound insulation is not very good. Afraid of disturbing others.

We stayed at The Gables for 2 nights before taking the ferry to the North Island Unfortunately after 2 weeks in the South Island this was the very worst accommodation of our trip so far. From the moment we arrived We and another couple of guests turned up at the same time shortly after 3 pm There was no one at the house and after a couple of phone calls (one incohérent) somebody eventually let us in to our rooms We had booked one of the cottages at the back which was probably our biggest mistake The cottage was shabby, kitchen cupboard in need of work, dirty (eg coffee granules all over one shelf), the kitchen was very poorly equipped (eg empty box of tea bags and no teaspoons), flies everywhere with no fly screen so we were unable to open the windows and as there is no air conditioning the room was very hot. Absolutely nowhere to put a suitcase other than the floor or sofa. Uncomfortable bed and thin pillows. The shower is extremely basic and a little grimy. Some very basic products just placed on the floor. No hooks either. There is a small untended garden at the front of the cottage. There are old bits of building equipment eg wheelbarrows strewn around. Parking could have been an issue as the details say only free on street parking is available We and the other couple parked at the back of the house where there was plenty of room to park although we had read that the host had previously objected to guests parking there. The wifi wouldn’t work for the first 24 hours although this was available on our second night The whole house, cottages, and outside areas are run down and very much past their best. The house is now bright blue and not as in the picture. Breakfast was pretty dismal. Squash not orange juice, ordinary sliced bread covered with a bit of cling film, various pots of vegemite, jam plonked in middle of the table. Everything self service. A couple of pain au chocolat were provided but no offer of an alternative. No hosting is going on at this unloved B and B. It is very much in need of a host who cares about the guests and what is required to run a good B and B Apparently the owner also runs the Escape to Picton boutique hotel and restaurant.Good luck

Stayed at the Gables and it was just lovely! Enjoyed wine on arrival and received few dinner suggestions. Breakfast was delicious, we enjoyed the fresh pai au chocolat in the morning and the fruits. Rooms were very clean and warm. Loved the location and how easily accessible everything was. Would definitely recommend.

We are travelling throughout New Zealand and have pre-booked accommodation every couple of days. On Thursday 7th March we took the ferry from North Island to South Island and booked into The Gables B&B for 2 nights. Things didn’t get off to a great start when the lady who met us stated we couldn’t park our car on site, only to later retract this and ‘allow’ us to park for one night only. We were shown to our room, a largish room with a double bed covered in 11 pillows and cushions and a single bed also covered in cushions and pillows. Much fuss was made of the offer of a small glass of wine from the Marlborough area. Our bathroom was across the landing, which we were unable to lock. Our room had no water or water glasses, no tea tray, no TV (we understand this is considered a historic B&B) and no bin. However, the whole room and house smelt really strongly of lilies, the smell was overpowering. We were tired so went to bed reasonably early, so were awake at 6.00am the following morning. My husband went to the communal lounge and dining room to get some tea at about 7.00am as we were gasping for a drink and there was nothing in the room! He was promptly told off by the host/proprietor who stated there was no access to this communal facility until 8.00am. He was then accused of waking up other guests. At breakfast the host then accused a Danish couple of breaking a window in a very aggressive manner, however, they had shown us a picture of the window hanging off on one hinge with a gale blowing through. It clearly needed maintenance. We had seen enough and decided to leave immediately, so packed up and left. We did not request a refund for the night we didn’t stay, but our accommodation provider did raise this only to be refused. The host stated we should have told him of the issues we had before leaving. We disagree, the whole experience, coupled with the stench from the lilies, meant we just wanted to get away.

The Cottage was simply gorgeous, quiet, clean and very tastefully decorated. The Staff were amazing and very friendly. The breakfast was huge, fresh, and had lots of options. The owner has the Escape to Picton restaurant just down the road and it was truly excellent.

Nice second floor room with very small bathroom with shower. Juliearna was gracious hostess. Served full continental breakfast. Harbor and downtown restaurants within walking distance. Close to ferry. Pema was very helpful and friendly with breakfast.

I stayed here two nights at the beginning and end of my queen charlotte walk. I stayed in the Pictonian room the first time - I came straight off the ferry to drop bags off - after messaging first - and still the lady was quite gruff about not checking in which was fine. The location is great as it is right in town. The room and house was clean and had all i needed. The shower was very old fashioned and small but fine for a night. At the end I had a cottage as I wanted a bath. I had to drag my case along a gravel driveway which is not ideal. The cottage was fine but has no heating or cooling and was quite hot. No screens on windows for bugs either. Very clean and comfortable bed. Breakfast is simple and a bit on the sweet side for me but more than adequate. I hardly saw any staff so no comment on friendliness really,
