Quirky place with high standard. It must have been a challenge to run a hotel in such an old building. My bathroom was freshly updated in a modern theme and worked to perfection. The bed was comfy and had a interesting frame. Nothing wrong with it but at some point in its life it must have had a water accident. It did not affect my sleep. We did not dine in nor did i have breakfast. It was a bit to expensive

Some very good things about here, some not so good, i think it needs a tweak and it will bring it up a bit, but ok for a one night break. We went on the country breaks offer which consists of a free drink dining allowance of £40 each for meal in The Herd restaurant and breakfast. Room was quirky but clean and quiet, had large bed and decent bathroom with some toiletries, you also get tea coffee stuff in the room which was nice. The meal was decent and appropriately priced , they specialise in steaks and were quite tastey, the sharing board with the hummus a little disappointing for a starter for two , but my husbands meat board was good value and quiet large for the one person portion, the main issue was with the extra onion rings which were typical freezer shop variety not the "chunky" as described which i would have thought to be homemade, soggy pale and just not good quality. We did not have dessert as were too full after the steak which comes with really lovely chips and other bits as was a nice meal in quirky surroundings. When the bill arrived in a little box thought it would have a couple of choccies in too, but it didnt ! shame , its the little extras that make all the difference ! Breakfast typical as would expect and my husband had the full english which looked really good, I had the pancakes which arrived with normal not crispy bacon , but were also good, you can help yourself to other bits from a table , the juice wasnt nice i dont get why these places serve cheap orange juice and inferior cheap cranberry juice, its really not good enough quality and devalues the quality of the breakfast.I would say this break is quite good value booking through the country breaks company, do tell the place as they try to charge you for things included , other than that enjoyable.

Lovely individual hotel with great facilities, superb rooms, excellent food, and in a superb location. The restaurant has excellent food, including hanger steaks which was a great first for us - really tasty. Might want to train the waiters a bit, who are pleasant, but there were great stretches of time without a single waiter around. Good selection pf drinks from lovely real ales to excellent wines. Very comfortable sleep in a great room.

Had afternoon tea given as a present. The food and service was excellent with a fantastic range of sandwiches, scones and cakes. But it was the position of the table was a little disappointing it was if we were sitting in the hotel reception area.

Table of 8 with my friends, everything good especially the steak ,we had a Tomahawk, chateaubriand, porterhouse. I eat every time at the heard, from different chefs but the lady Gigi from Romania , is the best chef ever, she cooks the steak perfectly she is The One !

Overpriced, underloved , worn furnishings, tiny beds and uncomfortable pillows. The elephant could be a gem but the management appear to have confused quirkiness with quality. God forbid you stay in your room one minute longer than 11am, you’ll receive a passive-aggressive phone call from reception. £18 for an average cooked breakfast and sparse continental buffet. Simply not worth the money. Starr on reception would benefit from a course in guest relations/general customer service

Great friendly staff, lovely food (especially the steak) but no chance of getting a drink after 10:30 pm - very disappointing. Despite the fact that we were three residents of the hotel we were told the bar was closing due to lack of customers. Can’t recommend it.
