Upstairs Hotel

We stayed here during a cycle tour of Flanders. The hotel has a modern hostel vibe, industrial styling with lots of concrete, bricks and metalwork, located just off the promenade. The hotel is a standard layout, despite its name the reception, bar and dining room are on the ground floor. The staff there were lovely and helpful. We were able to store our bikes securely in the basement. Our bedroom was on the third floor (I think), accessible by lift. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. Our en-suite had a shower rather than a bath. We had a drink at the bar before bed but didn't dare go on the slide. We didn't have breakfast as we thought it was a touch expensive at €20 each, the reception staff were happy to direct us to a local bakery. We would be happy to stay here again.

Very funky hotel but sadly my room had bedbugs. The bites appeared on my back during the next day - they can only have come from here as I slept in my own bed before and after this one night. Please try and sort this problem out, I had to spend a fortune on bed bug spray when I got home as I was terrified I had brought them home .

We loved this hotel. While booking and reading about the hotel, we were slightly concerned that it would be a bit too “funky” (we are in our 60s and 70s), but it was definitely a nice place to stay for all ages. First of all, we had requested a low floor room, and the request was well taken into account, which is not the case in all hotels. We had booked a big room and it was really wonderful. The room was nice, with separate bathroom and toilet, and with a wooden (or fake wooden) floor, which we always appreciate. Much cleaner and nicer than all those carpet floors in many places. Reception staff was kind, polite, quick and knowledgeable. Breakfast was outstanding. The bar in the evening was very pleasant. Location is excellent. Some minor points we did not like (and hence the 4 “star” rating) were the following. The mattress was very hard, for us too hard, but some people might like it. The floor in the shower was too slippery, this can easily be avoided by other materials. The shower was already narrow, and with the (unnecessary) soapdish attached to the wall it became even narrower. There was space enough for a larger shower. When we came back to the room after 3 PM, it was still not cleaned (the ”YES” sign to request cleaning was put up before 10 AM). Understandable, because it was a very busy Friday with lots of changes, and a basket was put in front of the door later with new towels etc … All these were minor issues, and we will certainly return to this place.

Hipster Hotel, very close to all the action and a short walk from the train station. Staff were friendly enough, and the lobby area has lots of cool features like a pit, slide, and dartboard. Unfortunately the rooms are a little uncomfortable. Quite small, no aircon, noisy (you hear every flush) and serviced by small corridors. Great WiFi and shower, OK breakfast. Probably would not return but fine if you're young and easily amused for a night or two. Certainly not in the summer as a lack of air might be unbearable.
