My most disappointing hotel stay in Japan
This was my first time staying at a hotel in Japan that left me feeling extremely disappointed. I had clearly booked and paid in advance for a non-smoking room, which was more expensive, but I was willing to pay extra for comfort and health reasons.
However, upon check-in, I was assigned a smoking room by a foreign front desk staff member who seemed inexperienced and unprofessional. The entire floor I was placed on was designated for smoking, and the room smelled strongly of cigarette smoke — it felt unpleasant and unclean in a way I’ve never experienced before.
I immediately went back to the front desk to request a room change. The same staff member insisted that “all rooms smell the same” and that they couldn’t change my room. I returned to my room, trying to cope, but eventually the smell became unbearable.
Later, I spoke to another foreign staff member, who was more helpful and agreed to change my room. Interestingly, he also told me that all rooms smell the same, but the new room I received was completely different — fresh, clean, and without any smell of cigarettes.
What upset me the most was:
1. The misinformation and poor service from the first staff member
2. Not receiving the non-smoking room I had clearly booked and paid more for in advance
3. The dishonesty — claiming all rooms smelled the same, when that was clearly untrue
Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this hotel to others. It does not live up to its price or promises.
