The Nathaniel Clarke Homestead remains an elegant emissary from our old times of colonies..
Giant sugar maple trees shade the long back lawn of the property, on the banks of the Oyster River and tidal marshlands. The front yard is set back from the Boston Post Road.
On the inside, the house affords modern amenities while retaining the old world charm and quirks of an historic New England Homestead.
Steeped in history and maritime mystery, the house is a classic that hearkens back to the time of pilgrims and yeomen who built New England from its pristine wilderness and made America the land of the free, and the home of the brave.
It also features a large back and front yard, with enchanting flowerbeds and barns- a historic jelly shed, and a corn crib. These out-buildings enhance the atmosphere and the privacy of the property, bordering it into 2 separate sections, one of which is technically off-limits to guests with a separate access, without interference. Their usage is reserved by the owners.
The parking is provided for 5 cars, even though it can host more. If more spaces are needed, please consult us as the owners may reserve a spot for their own usage, from time to time.
The back yard features a grouping of Adirondack chairs, an outdoor grill area, picnic area, and a swing, hanging from a huge old maple tree. Read, enjoy a nice sunbath, or push your children on the swing.
The property is of course an ideal place for retreats and large parties such as weddings and other ceremonies, for which first class catering can be organized at a very affordable cost.
The greenhouse is another one-of-a-kind feature and a particularly pleasant place to sit and enjoy the view of the garden, surrounded by huge maples, providing a nice shade during the summer time.
The property was featured by the HGTV Design channel and thereafter was selected for the shooting of the film "The Word", 2013 WINNER of BEST DRAMATIC FEATURE (Manhattan Film Festival) and 2013 WINNER – SILVER ACE AWARD (Las Vegas Film Festival). One of the primary scenes of the film that was filmed in the greenhouse.
The owners have given a particular attention to the quality of the linen and to the bedding to provide you with a very comfortable night sleep. The cleaning is handled by a crew of professional housekeepers.

Family weekend
The charming house was well furnished and well equipped. The host was responsive when there was a small issue about the backyard barbecue grill. We all enjoyed ourselves very much!

Reunion of friends
We were a group of women who needed a place to gather. This house is a wonderful house. Full of beautiful art and plants. The side porch off the living room is a fabulous place to sit in the morning. Just a great place.

Great Girl’s Weekend
At first glance, the outside of the house looked like it needed a little care. Once we got inside we appreciated the charm and history of this home. There was plenty of room for us. Beds and furniture was comfortable. Coffee, cream, bagels and water left for us was greatly appreciated. Yvette was easy to communicate with!

Old Saybrook Experience
If you want to experience an older historical New England home with creaky wood floors, antique door hardware and beautiful grounds, this is your place. The home has been upgraded to provide modern plumbing and wiring, but don’t expect an open concept modern home with large kitchen and huge en-suite with a 1700’s exterior, because such is not style of this home. The location is close to town and highways so you can easily travel to anywhere you want on the Central Connecticut coast. Yvette, our hostess, was easy to communicate with and very gracious. If I had any caution about this property, it would be accessibility. Like most historical homes, all entries into the home requires climbing stairs, and going to the upstairs bedrooms requires negotiating narrow staircases with taller steps than modern homes. Again, this is not a criticism of the home, but just a note to advise future guests with mobility issues to be sure they check out the floor plan and access points on this home before confirming a reservation. Overall, our family enjoyed the stay and I would consider this property again if I were to make a return trip to Old Saybrook.

Nathaniel Clarke Homestead
Lovely old home with many nooks and crannies. Lots of comfortable sitting spots, indoors and out. Two bedrooms on the ground floor for family members that might be challenged by STEEP staircases. It's a lovely, interesting old home.
