We were staying in the community and came to the restaurant for lunch with our family (five of us) and spent a good amount of money. The waitstaff encouraged us to enjoy the pool and have drinks and snacks, which we did. We hadn't been in the pool more than 20 minutes when a woman came up to us and asked if we were members of the club. We shared that we were staying in the community for our vacation and were encouraged to enjoy the pool with drinks and snacks. She then asked to see our cards, which we didn't have. She then said we had to leave, which I asked, "why?" She said you have to be a member of the club to enjoy the pool and I told her she was incorrect. When I asked her for her business card, she refused. She again told us we had to leave, or she would call security on us. I asked her again for her business card, and she refused. I then went to the front desk and shared our experience. I also shared our experience with our waitstaff, who responded, "Oh, is this the Venezuelan woman who came up to you?" I responded that I didn't know and when I pointed her out, they confirmed it was her and stated that many guest have had issues with her. Interestingly, there were other guests around the pool who were also enjoying drinks; however, this woman never approached any of them. She only interrogated us. After I filed a complaint with the front desk, the spa manager came out to us and reluctantly gave me her business card. I then asked her as to why she only approached us and no one else around the pool. I asked her if it was because we were a family of color? Was it because we were a latino family? Or was it because we simply didn't look like the others around the pool? She became tongue-tied and couldn't answer. So, I helped by sharing that she treated us differently because we were people of color, latinos, and not buff and pretty as the others around the pool. No matter that we spent over $250 in food and drink and that we had permission to be there. Based on this horrible interaction with the spa manager, we never returned. The waitstaff obviously knew who she was, and the front desk person was impotent to step in and address this situation. We actually considered buying property in this community but after experiencing racism and classism from the spa manager, that will never happen. The thing that bothers me the most is that we are human beings first and deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. This woman embarrassed us in front of other guests and treated us like second-class citizens. When she threated to call security on us, I actually encouraged her to do so because we knew all of the security personnel as we came and left the community and built a solid rapport. The fact that we spent our hard-earned money as vacationers to only be treated so terribly by this woman is troubling for many reasons. I share as a cautionary tale and hope others will not experience what we did.
