Stayed here for a few days while working in the area. I was able to park outside (Pay and display) and upon arrival had a lovely warm greeting from the owner. I felt at home. The room was small but had all the basics needed. There was a fan in the room and I was able to set myself up. Breakfast was also very good. I would happily look this place up again if available when in the area. It was a short walk to the town centre and not far to walk to the nearby cinema too.

My hubby & I stayed here whilst visiting for the weekend to attend a wedding. The owner, Hendrik & his team are lovely, friendly & welcoming. Our room was perfectly comfortable, neat & clean. Amenities in the room included the standard tea/coffee etc plus an ironing board & some other bits & bobs to make one's stay comfortable. The breakfast as included was also really good & overall I could not find fault or complaint. Thank you for a lovely stay!

We had come over to the island as foot passengers and when deciding on where to stay, it seemed sensible to choose Newport with its good bus service to all parts of the island. The hotel's best asset was its location - we were close to the shops, the bus station and a number of eating places. At first sight, the front of the hotel was less than inspiring but the owner and his wife were very welcoming and our room was quite large and had the added advantage of a fridge which we kept well stocked with milk for drinks and lots of bottles of water (we were staying in very high temperatures in mid August). The ladies who served breakfast were very chirpy and friendly. I did feel that the cleaning regime was rather odd - maybe this was a throwback to Covid? We were asked each morning what needed doing and it didn't seem standard to make the beds. We asked for fresh towels and to have the bins emptied. There were some areas at breakfast which were also a sign of trying to cut back - only one slice of toast each and the yoghurts on offer were not great quality and were from Lidl. That said, I would say that all in all it was a comfortable stay and I would be happy to stay there again.
Response from Property: Thank you for your kind review. Please allow me to respond to some of your observations: We go out of our way to advertise that we provide a bed and breakfast service. We also clearly state that the building is Grade 2 listed and the front of the building is clearly depicted in the photographs on our website. We are actually proud of the fact that we are the owners of a building that is hundreds of years old! Covid is not a throwback - it is still very much amongst us. As a result, many guests prefer to have as little interaction with staff and as little intrusion into their rooms as possible. I trust that this explain why we ask guests what their cleaning requirements are. Many guests also appreciate that the Isle of Wight is under water restrictions and therefore do not request clean towels on a daily basis. Guests are not limited to how much they may eat. We prefer that guests ask for more, rather than us over supplying, which inevitably goes to waste. We also regularly reassess all brands and produce we serve up. The Lidl flavoured yoghurts and natural yoghurts are hands-on favourites with the vast majority of guests. We don't need to cut back, as supported by our very high occupancy percentages. We trust, however, that you now have a better understanding as to why we do certain things the way we do and we look forward to seeing you again.

This hotel is so handy for the shops, restaurants and bus station and is situated on a quiet road leading down to the Quay. Frederick and his wife were lovely hosts, who made us feel very welcome. We had Room 10, which was nice and large and had the benefit of a fridge, which was ideal in this exceptionally hot weather. There was also an ice making machine downstairs which was an added benefit. The room was very clean, with really comfy beds and plenty of sockets everywhere for charging our phones etc. The bathroom was a generous size, and there was plenty of hot water whenever we needed it. Frederick cooked our breakfast in the morning - lovely crispy bacon as requested and a perfect fried egg. The hotel is homely but has everything you need. I definitely would stay here again if visiting Newport.

A very welcoming and friendly hotel. This hotel has character and the rooms are kept extremely clean. Breakfast was really good using quality produce. I loved the little courtyard and enjoyed the odd glass of wine out there as it was so peaceful and quiet. On our last day we explained to the owner that we were leaving very early the next morning and it would be before breakfast. They made a sandwich and gave some fruit, and yogurt for our journey home and a glass of orange juice. I personally thought that was an indication of how well they looked after their guests. I cannot fault this hotel and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.

Room 11: King Room. Arrived about 15:00 ran a bath of lukewarm water. Popped the bubbles/aerator on in the bath and that worked for five minutes. The owner said he wasn't used to people being around in the afternoon so usually kept the boiler off. Apparently he was planning to put it on for my arrival but forgot. Told me it would heat up in ten minutes. Twenty minutes later it was the same. I gave up and tried an hour later and it was hot. He thought the aerator might have tripped a switch and said he'd check. The bubbles did work an hour later but again switched off after a while and wouldn't re-start. On check-in I was asked what time I'd be having breakfast. I said 09:00 (which was the latest) but in the event didn't go instead opting to sleep in. I'll try it tomorrow. I don't really want to be booking a specific time for breakfast though. There are only 12 rooms I think, why can't I just turn up when I feel like in most hotels? Tonight I've noticed that the carpet in the bedroom near the steps down to the bathroom is soggy. I get dried in the bathroom so it's not dripped off me. Somewhere, there is a leaking underfloor pipe. Yesterday I noticed it too but properly checked it out today. This is more minor but the toilet roll is very very cheap. As are the dispenser bottles of bodywash/handwash. On the plus side there's a fridge. The room is a bit shabby around the edges and pretty small given it's (I think) the second best room. I spent two hundred on a two night stay and I definitely wouldn't again. I usually love independent places but wish I'd booked the Premier Inn. Quite frankly the owners are out of their depth and charging too much. Anywhere else I'd be complaining but I doubt the capacity of these owners to even understand what they're doing wrong, so I will have my breakfast tomorrow, smile and check out. I would imagine this place is for mainlanders like me who haven't done their research properly.
Response from Property: Thank you for your review although it is a pity that you did not enjoy your stay. We don't normally respond to reviews as we are of the opinion that readers can make up their own minds as to whether a review is fair or not. Merely for the record: all our guests are mainlanders and from the rest of Europe and for that matter, from all over the world. From their reviews it is clear that their experiences were quite different to yours. Also for the record: we have one of the highest occupancy percentages on the Island, so we must do something right! Regards, Newport Quay B&B
