Clarendon Hotel has a very nice bistro with outside seating. As Tuesday is a special day for pizzas, we had a large chicken pizza, with non-alcoholic beverages. Price for the pizza was less than $20. The bistro is popular with families. Our room is rated as 5 stars, staying there was very enjoyable and moderately priced. It's certainly a great place to stay in Newcastle.

Love the Clarendon. Will always stay there. Room spacious and has everything I need. Great pub downstairs, has live music, trivia etc. Friendly staff. So central to the Civic Theatre, tram stop just up the road, more great restaurants around the corner in Darcy Street and also across the road at the Honeysuckle Wharf. Thanks Deb and the lovely crew at Clarendon x

This is a peculiar hotel. It has no reception desk, no staff except some ladies who come in midday to do the rooms, it serves no meals or drinks. Instead it has an electronic AI concierge called Alexa (I think) who does her best. However she has some learning to do. She didn't know what the word "taxi" meant. On the positive side it's a very attractive building, beautifully furnished and spotlessly clean. The rooms are large and have a kitchenette with the fanciest hot water jug I've ever seen. If you have a car then I'd recommend it. If you don't I wouldn't. The nearest places to eat are only a five minute drive away according to Alexa. She couldn't say what this in miles or kilometres. In fact it's about 1.5 kilometres which is quite a distance to walk for breakfast or dinner, especially if it's raining which sometimes happens in Scotland. The system for getting in is unusual. Before you arrive you're emailed a code to open the front door. The same code also opens your room. However it doesn't normally operate till check in time which is 3pm. If someone arrives in Dundee in the morning they won't want to cart your baggage around till 3pm. They want to be able to leave it at their hotel which in ordinary hotels you can normally do before check in time. I was able to arrange to leave it there but only with a great deal of messing around.

Great location, right next to Civic Theatre. Music on in the garden on a Sunday afternoon but not too loud that when in room it’s deafening. No parking on site but we street parked nearby on Sunday afternoon (free on Sunday) then paid only for an hour on the Monday morning - 5 minute walk. Clean big rooms, new bathrooms, balcony good size and overlooked courtyard. Restaurant bistro awesome and really wonderful choice of beers on tap. Will stay here again, thanks team Clarendon. Your staff are also brilliant!

Classic war-time hotel with art-deco features -- built on the site of another hotel, The Waverley -- and designed for the modern age by Pitt and Merewether (name ring a bell?). This was our first time staying at the Clarendon; our son recommended it to us. Centrally located, these days it's a lively joint, and popular, with live bands, slot machines, beer garden, bar, and cafe/restaurant. We ended up with a King-sized charming and spacious room facing onto Hunter Street with a balcony, and little kitchenette (no cooking facilities but you don't need them here!). When the French doors were shut, it was quite sound proof, but we liked to have them open when we weren't sleeping. We had asked for a quiet room and were told that the hotel didn't have any, but Deb, the manager on reception/admin., looked after us -- she was friendly, efficient, and responsive (five stars right there). The lighting levels in the room were perfect, day or night - I loved the full-length windows. The bed was firm, and sheets fresh (pillows a bit soft, for me). As for parking, the online instructions are easy to follow. There's a drop-off point at the back of the hotel to unload/load your suitcases, but you can't park there for any length of time. Overall, a very comfortable, centrally located, well-priced hotel in Newcastle.
