Puddicombe House is a lovely old building that we had found on Ontario Finest Inns. We chose this place based on its reviews and not too far of a drive for a night away. Upon entering the house we found there was no reception. We waited until a busy server asked us if we needed a table. After telling her we were there for the night she politely handed us the key and gave us directions to our room. Entering our room, we found the bed to be clean and comfortable and the bathroom modern. However, old items on the wall still had not been taken down and painted over, maybe from old sconces or phones. Also, where curtains had been taken down, the wall had not been repainted. It brings the quality of the room down. when things are left unfinished. Please note there is no way of contacting the staff downstairs except by using your own phone or popping down there. We eventually. found the wifi password behind the bedroom door. Dinner at the Inn was lovely. Soup was delicious, as was the main meals and dessert. After dinner we noticed there wasn't anywhere to sit, in front of a fire with an after dinner drink. The 2 main rooms only have tables and chairs, but no wingback or lounge chairs where you can sit and have a drink or a coffee . This made us want to go straight back to our room. We didn't have a great sleep after we found out no staff stay on site.(I did read about this but thought it was an exaggeration) We were told there was someone else staying in the house but we didn't hear or see anyone and our car sat alone in the parking lot. We understand it is off season however knowing we were left in the building with no staff was a little unnerving. We headed down early the next day grabbed a coffee and chatted with the owners of the inn. Very nice couple! The inn seems to cater more to people wanting to eat there or weddings. I think a little more care of overnight guests is needed. Maybe a pamphlet in the room explaining wifi, TV and hours of the bar and restaurant. Even a little about what to explore in New Hamburg. Overall, a great dinner and night away but not quite what we expected from the finest Inns of Ontario.

Overall we had a really lovely weekend - the dining was top notch (but yes, it's expensive - dinner for 2 with a shared appy, shared salad, 2 mains and 2 drinks was $175 with tip) and the atmosphere was lovely. However, the price point for accomodations seems excessive. We booked 2 nights B&B in one of their "cottages" for $379CAD/night (add tax and you're spending $442CAD nightly). I have never spent that kind of money for a hotel stay but we were off for a girls weekend and really wanted something memorable. The cottage (which was really more like a storefront, right on the main st) was beautifully renovated and really gorgeous. Unfortunately we had a few issues with the room but their manager on duty (Jill - she was brilliant!!) handled the situation in a positive way. I've read some previous reviews that spoke of small touches that dropped this place from being a 4star and they are correct. We found a number of things missing - no welcome information about breakfast times, WiFi access, or the PIN to use their TV's; no black out/privacy curtains; no shelves or ledges in the shower for toiletries; exterior lights not working over the doors which made it challenging to unlock after dark; had to hunt for ceiling fan remotes & then most didn't seem to work. Minor items but they all add up. The staff were all very pleasant and friendly, although a couple of them didn't have a lot of knowledge about the place. Had we not been spending so much we would have brushed off the list of issues and oddities without much thought but when it's a 4 star you have higher expectations. The spa was nice with very fun & friendly staff. I would not be inclined to return for an overnight stay here (I would probably return for a meal), unfortunately, but also do not regret having gone there. I would say it's more 3.5 stars than 4.

We were very disappointed in our stay. The look of the main house and the two little eating gazebos was cute. However, everything else about the stay was a letdown. It is nothing like the B&B experiences we have had in other stays all over the US and Canada. When I read other reviews, it is almost like are writing about two different places. When we arrived, there was no greeting. We had to find someone outside the kitchen to take us to the cottage we stayed in. The cottage was ok, though a bit gloomy inside. There was only one thin blanket and it went down to about 50 degrees at night. However, there was no way to contact anyone to get another blanket or turn on the heat. And the breakfast was pitiful! It is only served from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. We had exactly three choices of food - a bagel with fried egg, cheese, and bacon; or toast with poached eggs and bacon; or yogurt and a granola bar. Each came with a very tiny fruit cup (which was good). There were no muffins or other baked goods, no quiches, potatoes, waffles, or anything else you expect at a real B&B. We have had better breakfasts at Hampton Inns! To add to unhappiness with this stay, including tax it cost us $400 Canadian for one night!

There was a slight confusion as we checked in, but that was only because we had been upgraded and not told. Our room was great, a king bed with lots of room, great rain shower. Our dinner was fantastic, especially our server Maddie K. She recommended a walk down by the river after dinner. Breakfast the next morning was also very good. We had the focaccia bread, mango salad, agnolotti, chicken roulade, and desserts. All were fantastic.

My husband and I recently celebrated our 10th Wedding Anniversary at Puddicombe House. Our special dinner for 15 guests exceeded our expectations. Our dishes were amazing, beautifully served and delicious. Our guests commented that what was served, was "art on the plate". Our servers - Nicky and Jill were fantastic...very attentive, efficient, pleasant and helpful. Arranging all the event details with Nick (the Manager) was effortless. Nick was very helpful, professional and understanding. Thank you so much the all the Puddicombe House staff who helped us organize our special event,. Special thanks to the Chef, Nick, Nicky and Jill...you made our day a huge success! Grace & Kevin

Beautiful spot in an unexpected location. The room we were seated in was beautifully appointed with white marble tables and green velvet chairs. Very sophisticated. It was very quiet. So quiet that it made conversation slightly uncomfortable. The room across the hall was cozier looking, had more activity (courtesy of the bar likely) and seemed more lively. The servers, though mostly quite young, were exceptionally professional. Very impressive. We had a casual meal with a salad and handhelds. The pear salad was delicious though I would have enjoyed more pear and more goatcheese. The italian burger was very good. It is messy though, so beware and lean over the plate. But really nice balance flavours and very delicious. The fried chicken sandwich was an entire chicken breast. The sticky and sweet sauce was very flavourful. The seasoned fries that accompanied both sandwiches were tasty and addictive but overly salty. At first I couldn't stop eating them and then I had to. Noticed the starters of diners around us, a delish looking plate of calamari and a daily soup that was getting rave reviews. In the end a solid meal in a beautiful environment. Next time I would try to get a seat in the other room and try the more elevated food offerings. Will return!

My wife and I hosted a dinner for 31 family members to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. We had a private room by the bar that fit our group well. The service and food were exemplary. A big thank you to Nick and the entire team at Puddicombe House!
