My husband and I are locals to the Napa area. We live about 20 min away and come often. We’ve stayed at numerous bed and breakfasts in the area and had high expectations for the Mcclelland. We arrived at 4:45. I had messaged the property the day before asking if an early check-in would be allowed and received no response. Not a big deal, there was plenty to do in Napa that afternoon. We walked in the front door was unlocked, we thought this was because we were expected. We walked into a dark house. No lights on. No reception area, no wine as stayed upon arrival, and not a person in sight. It felt as if we walked into someone’s home uninvited. My husband called the owner and asked if anyone was around to check us in. The owner was somewhere out of the area, and clearly busy doing something else as there was a lot of background noise on his end of the phone. He told us our room was upstairs and provided us the code to get in. Well, this is where things went from uncomfortable to mortifying. We are on the phone with the owner opening our room and there was a couple in the room in bed! After apologizing profusely and closing the door the owner told us to go back downstairs to a different room, saying that it was a mistake and didn’t know how it happened. We later found out that the maid hadn’t this couple into the wrong room. Our new room was nice (the library room). They provided a complimentary bottle of champagne with an apology note. A nice gesture. But the room was not what we had in mind. The bed was comfortable, but there was a lot of guess-work in figuring out what controls did what. When we finally settled down for bed the porch light from outside lit up our entire room. After trying to ignore it and fall asleep, my husband finally got up and started looking for switches to turn it off in the lobby. With a few tries we finally found it and we’re able to go to sleep. Breakfast was scheduled for 8-10am. We came in the kitchen around 8:20. There was a young man preparing some yogurt. We were not told good morning, not told to have a seat. Just started at awkwardly. My husband finally asked, “what do we do? Is breakfast ready?” He responded with “10 minutes” so we went back to our room and came back at 8:30. We sat down and again, we were not talked to or greeted, or even told what we would be having for breakfast. Just sat there awkwardly waiting. Omelets came out one at a time. Again, not a word. I had to ask for water, sugar, and a stirring spoon. I felt as if we were unwanted guests and an inconvenience to be served breakfast. Overall, the house is beautiful, the beds are very comfortable, the rooms are also beautiful. The hospitality and customer service was just atrocious. We have never felt so awkward or uncomfortable in a bed and breakfast, and to walk in on another couple in the room we had reserved is an experience I will unfortunately not be able to forget. Needless to say we will not be returning. The complimentary bottle of
