Lovely hotel in a quiet little town. We stayed at the Sanso building, in the Corner Room Japanese Western Special Room (Moegiichi). The room was impeccable, with a private bath, a king sized bad, a deck and a small garden framed by pine and maple trees. Everyone was unfailingly polite, as per Japanese standards. If you have more than 2 in the room, the futon gets laid out while you are away at dinner. Top stars to the futon, they use high quality Tempur mattresses that are so wonderful to sleep on. Food was lovely and painstakingly plated. If you are a Miyazaki fan, it’s easy to see inspirations dotted around the hotel and the town. I came in December and many shops in town were not open, they looked shuttered for good. There are a few food options but not extensive. A few parts of the hotel were dated; mainly the red carpets linking the various buildings. They looked like a deep cleaning or a change was in order.

Amazing experience, I travelled solo to the ryoken via the coach service (which in itself had beautiful views of the countryside) for a one night stay. Unfortunately, I speak little Japanese but the staff at the ryouken and the coach driver helped me as much as they could. The hotel was in a gorgeous area and had a beautiful interior with a beautiful view onto the river which you could hear. A staff member helped me when I checked in with how the hotel works with an English leaflet and informed me dinner, breakfast and about the three outdoor baths and indoor public baths. You also get supplied a yukata for your stay which you wear within the hotel and outside and indoor slippers when you first arrive. The baths themselves were a beautiful temperature and very relaxing and loads of free amenities were given in the private changing room for each bath. The baths sit higher up than the rooms and have walls surrounding each one wherein you can still see some of the mountainous scenery (and the sky) while not feeling any worries about people seeing you. Also, due to the baths being private, tattoos are allowed (I think the public bath also allowed tattoos). Showers were located next to the baths to clean prior to entrance which had lovely smelling products. Food was excellent and I had a waitress accommodate me during breakfast and dinner informing me of the dishes supplied and what each meal was each with a seasonal touch. When I return to Japan next I will have to make sure to visit here again for more nights, I highly recommend it to anyone, even those who speak little Japanese. Everyone was very accommodating and I didn't feel isolated eventhough I was a solo traveller.

In accordance with Tokyo business trip, I decided to go to Shiman Onsen, which can be reached by high-speed bus １ books from Tokyo, and examined the color 々 including word of mouth and chose this hotel. ◎ It was a two-night meal, a solo trip, Friday stay, but it was very cheap. Other famous inn was not able to make a reservation, and it was very expensive even if it was possible. ◎ hot springs of ”Tamura” were available. ◎ dinner was also half Viking in the basic seat, and tenpu (４ kinds) were fried and free to eat. Also, there were very many quantitative and I couldn't eat. ◎ Breakfast was a Viking form, but because of the time shift, it was almost dense and I was able to eat without stress. ▲ The heating equipment in the room was old and bad and very cold. Also, the sound was quite loud and noisy. If this was not, it was a full score.

I stayed at Tokiwasure-no-Yado Yoshimoto for two nights in December 2023. Everything was impeccable - the service, the room, the onsen and the staff were all lovely. Much thought and care has gone into the elaborate, exquisitely plated kaiseki breakfasts and dinners and each room has all the comforts and amenities a luxury onsen getaway could ask for. Even better, this ryokan did not discriminate against me as a solo traveller and allowed me to stay in the main building in a spacious and luxurious room with its own private onsen. There is a separate area in each room with a private bath for changing, cosmetics and drying one’s hair which I found highly convenient and made good use of during my stay. The private onsen attached to my room was comfortable, overlooking the lush green forest and hillside where the ryokan is situated. I will definitely be stopping by Shima Onsen again and Tokiwasure no Yado Yoshimoto will be my accommodation of choice.

This was my first time using this service, but I have become a fan due to their wonderful service. I stayed in a room along the river, and it was spacious, clean, and a great place to truly relax. I was able to use the bath by myself and it was relaxing, and even after just soaking in the bath for about 10 minutes, my body felt warm and warm from the quality of the spring water long after I got out. The food used local ingredients, looked and tasted great, and was served to perfection. I felt that the hospitality and service provided by all the employees made me feel more comfortable than anything else. I chose this inn because I was exhausted from work and wanted to go to a hot spring, but it turned out to be a really relaxing trip. From now on, I would like to visit every year as my family's regular accommodation.

Nice location along the river, the onsen offered peaceful setting, enjoyed our evening stroll through the community. Meals were good and plentiful. It was a nice property but not stuffy or over the top luxurious. Staff were excellent and helpful. The room had a very nice layout with lots of room, nice sitting area, nice balcony overlooking the river. An evening walk up the valley to visit the rest of the onsen town is a must, especially for Miyazaki fans. Everyone should experience a ryokan stay. It did not appear that they cater to overseas visitors which was great for felling like you were getting an authentic experience. The customs and rituals that go with a ryokan stay are not intuitive for an overseas traveler, but really should not be missed. It is one of the top experiences when in Japan. We are glad our son was along to explain things to us, it took a lot of the worry out of our stay.

Absolutely beautiful location and multiple hot spring options! The buffet breakfast was exquisite as well ask the multi-course dinner. Sadly we only were able to stay one night but waking up in morning to see beautiful flurries of snow surrounded by mountains was much more magical and memorable than I imagined! During our stay, I even lost my camera and the staff were so kind to go down the mountain and mail it to me at the airport, speak Japanese to the staff at the airport to help me find it and I am forever grateful for their kindness and service. If I lost my camera I would’ve lost all my photos and videos of the trip! The staff speak Chinese and fluent English and so it was really easy to communicate with them. Will definitely come back!! Sawatari Onsen has been rooted in this area for a long time as the hot spring of Kusatsu Onsen. Looking at the map, it's about halfway between Kusatsu and Shima. Compared to places like Kusatsu, the hot spring town has no foot traffic and almost no shops. Silence. . . correction. I think people who like remote hot spring towns will love this kind of atmosphere. Miyataya is located at the top of the hill in the hot spring town. When you look at the inn from the outside, you might think it's small, but it's built like a typical Kyoto townhouse, with the inn going deeper and deeper into the back. The three-story building has an indoor bath, a private open-air bath, and a family bath. It's nice to know that you can take a bath 24 hours a day, except for the private open-air bath. It's not as acidic as Kusatsu, nor is it cloudy, nor does it have a strong sulfur smell. I wonder if the temperature of the water will be a little lukewarm. . . It may not be enough for hot springs for hot guys who only like hot springs, but since I'm not too assertive, it was gentle on my skin and didn't irritate my skin, making it easy to take a long bath. Both meals were served in a private room. I highly recommend the famous cream-grilled apple that I had for dinner. At first glance, you might think it's a dessert, but since it's topped with scallops, it could almost be treated as a main dish. It's also hearty because it uses a whole apple. The wait staff was a foreigner who was learning Japanese, so I had the rare experience of writing drink orders on a piece of paper and handing them to them. I thought it was a shame that the open-air bath was a completely closed space with no view. But overall, I think it's a good inn. I would like to visit again as a refreshing bath after a day trip bath in Kusatsu.
