The Aberdare Country Club

A beautiful old colonial home which has been turned into a resort. The main original building and the cottages are lovely & have the potential to be something special. However, the furnishings and furniture are rather grubby and in need of replacement and cleaning. The drapes and net curtains in our cottage were dirty, coming off the track & the chair coverings were grubby. The food is buffet which was fair. Be aware the cottages are set on a hill and there are many steps. The nature walk was gentle & very interesting. You do get close to the animals. Francis was informative and very knowledgeable. He was a delight to spend a couple of hours with and very easy to chat to. The grounds are very beautiful and well cared for. The views are lovely. There are noisey peacocks so be prepared, but there are also dainty bush bucks which graze around the cottages. You can have the fire lit in your room to keep warm.

We were plesantly greeted by singers and with optional donation they invited you to dance with them. We stayed in duplexes. There were many optional add-on options such as onsite or offsite game drives or golfing. Driving in or walking along the grounds we saw warthogs, deer, peacocks, zebras, dik-dik and antelopes. The outdoor pool was too cool to try. It was a nice surprise to get a hot water bag at the evening turn-down service.

This is a historic location, it is beautiful and I want to support it, but I do need to point out some facts. 1. It is on a steep hillside and travel to your cabin may involve walking up several flights of steep stairs at high altitude. 2. our cabin (25) had black mold on the ceilings in both the bathroom and bedroom. 3. The peacocks and peahens that are so pretty during the day scream like a woman being murdered all night long outside your window. No doubt you could get used to this, but not the first night. Otherwise, they will light a fire in your fireplace to warm the cabin, it has cable TV, the bed is comfortable, and it is very pretty.

Absolutely beautiful, we stayed for two nights as part of a two week holiday to Kenya . It has a real colonial vibe . 20 mins to the beautiful Aberdare NP ( Ark gate ) We stayed in the accommodation called ‘The Nursery ‘ huge rooms , wonderful bathroom . Three beds ! The grounds are fabulous with plenty of wildlife ( we also did several game drives into the National Park & often the only jeep there ! Abundance of animals & birds ) our special thanks to Francis for the nature & bird walks within the grounds , so accommodating & so knowledgeable. Dominic at reception was a great guy & so helpful . We enjoyed the buffet style meals , the food was excellent, we were on a full board package . Thank you to David N head of restaurant for all his help & information, Sarah & Jackline for the impeccable service , every member of the staff is a credit to the establishment. We loved it . Look out for the troup of black & white colobus monkeys that frequent the grounds . The smallest antelope the Suni is also here plus impalas. Spectacular views from the terrace . We did see the Ark ( sister hotel ) in the National park too . Loved the NP so quiet in comparison to Masai Mara & Amboseli where we had come from . Loved everything, would love to return one day . We only visited for lunch on our way to The Ark. the grounds are beautiful. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was good. A wonderful reprieve from the road from Nairobi. Old world charm and peaceful setting

We visited in 2019 and are so glad to return this summer. We were in a group of 24 travelers and we joined the morning nature walk and horse riding. They were great. The rooms were spacious, clean and cozy. Instead of feeling “dated”, we enjoyed its traditional British style. The restaurant and bar were fantastic, too. We also visited their sister hotel, The Ark Lodge, and we had great time there. For those who love animals, you’ll see animals nearby around your cottages! At night, if you feel cold, you can ask them to light up your fireplace and put hot water bags under your blankets. So sweet!
