Travelled with Rail Discoveries. This was the worst hotel I have stayed in with them. First room I was shown had an ant infestation on the bedside table. Second room was shabby and poorly maintained. Bed was rock hard. We had breakfast and dinners and the food was inadequate and sometimes inedible. This is definitely not a four star hotel.

If you're unfortunate enough to be booked into this hotel, especially with Great Rail Discoveries then, think again, quickly. It's just about 2 stars and certainly not 4. It's old,tired and needs a rebuild. If you're unlucky enough to be given a room facing the square, then try to convince them to allow you to use the air-conditioning so you can at least have the balcony door closed. Otherwise you'll boil and be eaten alive by mozzies. Just for good measure, the street cleaning machine comes by at 0530 every day, followed by the bottles going into the skip at 6. We were told it's autumn so no air-conditioning for you! The beds are rock hard with the springs ready to stab you in the sides. 1 rubber pillow but......another with possibly feathers. No storage space aside from a cheap flat pack with 1 drawer and a high shelf. Towels so thin your finger goes through them. Have a look at the website which shows the dining area for real guests. If you're with GRJ you are in the back room through the double doors. No smart table cloths and cutlery for you, oh no. Paper table cloth and a teaspoon for you. Plates cleared as soon as your cutlery is put down, regardless of the others who may not be finished. In short, avoid this pathetic excuse for a hotel at all costs, if you can.

This is worst hotel I have ever stayed in. It is not 4*. The rooms needed refurbishment, lack of furniture in the room. The bathroom was awful, could not sit straight on toilet as too small. Shower tiny and rusty, shower head clogged and water did not drain well. Door handle came off in my hand (was fixed that day) The lifts were very old and carpet floor dirty and worn. The food was terrible, cold and dry. Pasta hard, bread hard and stale. Lack of choice at breakfast, the bacon was swimming in fat. Only good thing to say was our room and bed were clean. We were shown 3 other rooms as complained and they were worse then one we had. Air con turned off in September so told to have balcony door open, I was bitten all over. As hotel on the square it is very noisy late at night and early morning.

I was there as part of a tour group booking which it seemed is the major part of the hotel's business but there were also individual travelers and couples. From the very friendly welcome to our leaving six days later the staff could not have been more friendly or helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for them and it was always done with a smile. I will say that service was sometimes a bit haphazard, especially in the dining room at dinner, but I can live with that. There was always a good buffet breakfast with plenty of choice and variety. My room was clean, everything worked, and there was good room service every day. It was not the largest of rooms but I do not go on holiday to sit in a room. The hotel is very conveniently located for all of the amenities and attractions in the town whilst the railway station is about five minutes walk away. All in all a very good stay for us. Thank-you.

Excellent friendly staff, good beds, good matrasses, good food, nice rooms. It is clear the hotel is in a process of modernisation. This is not ready, but important things have been upgraded to this day and age.
