Kalu's Hideaway Udawalawe

Beautiful hotel. We stayed in 6 different hotels during our trip to Sri Lanka, and although we stayed in more expensive and higher rated hotels, this was one of our favourites. It feels like a small boutique hotel. As with all of Sri Lanka, the staff are professional, polite and accommodating. It was lovely to be somewhere small and peaceful.

Super stay at the Kalu Hideaway. Stunningly scenic hotel with a lovely elephant/cricketing theme. We had a wonderful visit to the Elephant Transit Home to see the baby and young orphaned elephants. The hotel made a really special effort for our daughter’s birthday with a cake made by chef Peter Peters and his waiter, Sandaruwan. Chef Peter has his own herb garden so all the curries have fresh ingredients. Great location to stay for the Udawalawe National Park and ETH. Highly recommended.

An absolut lovely place. With a lot of privacy. Restaurant top, servants are speaking a perfect English and Chef cook Peter likes to come to the table for a chat. We recrived here the best hoppers. 😋 Udawalawe NP entrance is close and worh to go on Safari

Kalu's was such an amazing Hotel to stay at, we did 3 nights to relax and also did an early morning Safari which I highly recommend getting up early for! The hotel organised this for us and the guide was brilliant, had some incredible intimate moments with some young elephants. I can't praise the management and staff enough.. The food was lovely! breakfast, lunch and dinner. As the hotel was quiet for a couple days we even requested a lake fish curry which they happily organised with the chef and got some local freshly made bread to go with it. It was amazing! The owner should be very proud of all his staff but a special mention to Mangala and Sadaruwan! They couldnt do enough for us and giving us great advice with eating the traditional Sri Lankan food how it should be eaten properly. We got 5 star treatment every minute we were there. We will definitely be back when we visit Sri Lanka again in 2026. Thank you for making the end of our holiday so special 😁

What a place! The setting, the service, the people all truly wonderful. My family consists of myself and husband and our 13 year old son, we went on safari, saw the elephants being fed, how could we not fall in Love with this place?! Our only regret being that we didn’t stay for longer.

Exceptional stay in a hidden gem. Staff were wonderful, dinner was fantastic using local produce from the garden. Rooms very comfortable and pool and terrace area great for chilling. Well worth spending a couple of days R & R here and visiting Udawalawe for a jeep safari.
