Hotelli Möhkön Rajakartano - Ilomantsi

Möhkön Rajakartano is hotel - or more precisely an inn or an apartment hotel - in the village of Möhkö, 23 kilometers from the center of Ilomantsi. The road from Ilomantsi to Möhkö is asphalted. Only the last 800-900 meters before the hotel is narrow unpaved gravel road. The distance from Petkeljärvi National Park is 13 kilometers, from historical Öykkösenvaara battlegrounds 6 kilometers and from Möhkö Ironworks (the museum area) only 1 kilometer. There are walking trails between the hotel and Möhkö Ironworks and also between the hotel and Petkeljärvi National Park. So the location is perfect. Möhkö is the easternmost village in the continental European Union and Möhkön Rajakartano is the easternmost public accommodation in the continental European Union, near the Russian border. So this is a perfect place for those seeking geographical extremes. The riverside location is very beautiful and peaceful. There is a good swimming pier along the river. They also have a wood-heated riverside sauna. You get a free sauna bathing (1½ hours) there if you book at least 3 nights in the hotel. They have one rowing-boat, too, and it is free to use it. The river is a very good fishing spot but you need a special fishing permit. You can buy it online or from the hotel. We loved both hiking, swimming and fishing. The suite named Melaselkä is located upstairs in the main building. Also some smaller apartments are situated in the main building but most apartments are located in a separate building. Every apartment in the separate building has an own entrance but notice that some apartments are located upstairs and you have to use steep stairs. I could stay in any rooms. Sometimes there may be problems with hotel booking engines and in that case it is a good idea to contact the hotel directly and ask a free room. We stayed in the separate building in the upstairs apartment named Sikki. It is a smaller (45 square meters) apartment for four people. We had two bedrooms, a kitchen and a very small bathroom. There wasn't any shampoo in our bathroom but liquid hand soap was available. Our kitchen was well equipped. We had a fridge, a microwave oven, an electric kettle, a steamer and an electric wok. We also asked a portable induction cooker in advance and we got it. Tableware and linen were included in the room price. There was a heat wave in Finland when we stayed in Möhkön Rajakartano. Outside temperature was 30 degrees Celsius every day. Luckily nights were a bit cooler and we had insect nets in our ventilation windows. We also got a portable fun but unfortunately it wasn't a cooling fun. We really missed a cooling desk fun. The landlady and the landlord have owned this hotel complex since 2001. Earlier it was a border guard housing. At least the landlady has Karelian roots and the hotel has a traditional Karelian interior. The landlady and the landlord work together in the hotel.
