Hotels near Basilica of San Simpliciano in Milan

I was lunching at VMaison several months ago, but I remember very well the experience that was very good. I ordered fantastic club-sandwitchs, very recommended, and a great tiramisu. Beyond the quality of the pieces, the restaurant's context is charming, within a stunning and very refined boutique hotel. Prove it also outside, there is a very nice outdoor space. Excellent clean, fresh and new hotel that has everything you need. As a solo female traveler, I felt very safe here and it is seconds from the metro line. I stayed in a “cosy” room and after reading reviews that the rooms are tiny I wasn’t expecting too much, however the room was spacious enough for me and was fine for three nights, any longer I probably would have preferred a balcony/a view at least. The bathroom has a sleek finish however the design of it to get into the bath (also needed to take a shower as not separate) is quite dangerous and I would be surprised if no one has fallen. The shower screen is fixed so you have to climb around the side of it to get into the bath - very odd design. Only not rating five stars as I found the mattresses too firm for me and because of this I didn’t sleep great and due to price, £200 a night and did not included breakfast in their smallest room was quite unreasonable, it should include breakfast (€22 otherwise). Peaceful and quiet, staff very helpful, I would stay here again if could get a more reasonable price.

In Milan, I have also stayed at B&B Hotel Milano Cenisio Garibaldi, Hotel degli Arcimboldi, Lloyd Hotel, Hotel Pierre Milano, Hilton Milan & Mokinba Hotel King. Pros: - Location: (Walking) Porta Nuova (6mins), Corso Como (8mins), Brera Art Gallery (15mins), Monumental Cemetery (17mins), The Fashion District (20mins). - Bathroom amenities: Soap bar, combined shampoo/body wash, shower cap, hairdryer. - Free in-room WiFi (average speed approx. 29Mbps). - Quiet at night. Cons: - Room design is rather impracticle: no chair with back if you need to work (only a pouf stool), small desk not deeper than a laptop, almost no storage spaces, very dimly lit, bright neon light for the keycard slot that you cannot disable during sleep, in-room safe not large enough for a tablet or laptop, no door on bathroom area (so if you travel with someone else, make sure you are comfortable seeing each other intimately). - Breakfast is quite odd and overpriced. Located in the reception area, you can see and overhear all the discussions with guests (or gossip among staff about guests, which we found rather unprofessional!). A set menu plate with no choice (so we had a lot of food wastage). No standard items, ie. no fruit yoghurt, no cereal, no pastries (only a mini donut and mini muffin), no fresh fruit, no hot food, savory items only a couple of slices of ham and cheese from a plastic supermarket packet. Same items every day, mainly bread-based. - Staff need more training for a 4-star hotel. Check-in was slow, used toiletries not replenished when cleaning rooms, unprofessional staff behaviour as mentioned above. - Quality of towels and toiletries very low (more suited to a 3-star hotel). - Many fire escape maps in the hallways are completely incorrect, wrong room numbers and wrong hallway designs. Unsure how these passed safety inspections.

The hotel is somewhat off-centre (away from the business districts of Milano), but within broader city centre with reasonable public transport (~20 mins tramway including wait at the stop) and ~10 mins by taxi. Lively city area for non-business travellers (tourists) with choice of restaurants and more public transport links to areas of interest. The cleanliness is rather good, I only scored it less (2/5) because of the interior in bad need of renovation. The design is 1970-s/1980-s and the age since last decoration is probably not much fresher. This gives it the appearance of a run-down place, although they make good effort to keep it clean. The choice of darker brow-nish colours, combined with the installation of (very) very economic light bulbs, makes the room feel too dark and thus - less pleasant to stay in. For a business traveller it is impossible to read anything outside the spot of the reading lamp. It is also impossible to shave in the dark-ish bathroom, except for people who know their face well enough to shave with their eyes closed. The extra lamp above the mirror did not work, it was a bare little bulb (apparently in need of replacement) and the lampshade gone. Further need for maintenance in the bathroom was the sink - with the waste plug not opening to empty the sink, and the latter filling to the safety hole near the top, even form just a brief handwash.. The breakfast area has capacity for a busy crowd in the rush hour of all tourists taking a late breakfast, but the staff struggle to serve everyone fast enough. Some supplies were not replenished (e.g. bread, the fruit juices, milk for coffees) and later nobody ever came to the table to ask if we need something (perhaps they are not meant to serve tables, just clean them and replenish supplies?) The reception area was much brighter lit than the rooms, had modern automatic glass doors, and overall felt newer and better. Reception staff were friendly and helpful. Based on the overall experience, approx. 4/5 is a reasonable score, but by the hotel categorisation criteria I think 4 stars is too much and 3-star would describe it more accurately. They should remember that satisfaction is always biased by expectations - from the higher expectations of '4 stars' there would be more dissatisfied guests (like yours truly) than if you honestly promise a decent 3-star experience (then I'd have scored everything 5/5). This wouldn't impact revenues as, from what I know form MIlano hotels, the price was very competitive and would fit a 3-star property. Would I recommend it? To tourists - yes; to business travellers - only as a backup in case of fully-booked Milano like duringthe trade fair or Fashion Week ;)

The hotel is very close to the train station, but the entrance is quite small, causing some difficulty in finding it. The breakfast on the top floor is excellent, and the rooms provide a view of the train station.

What a great hostel, I’ve stopped at many hostels in my time but this was very much one of the better ones. I can only comment on our private room however. Friendly welcome, easy enough check in even though we arrived at 2am due to cancelled trains, not a problem! Great bar and area, things always happening. We saw a live jazz band in there for the one night we were there. Pub crawls, city tours for free, speed dating have it all. Our room was great, clean and comfortable. It was quite loud during the night, noisy neighbours (not the hostels fault) and a weird kind of opening of vents or something from the aircon possibly. Couldn’t put my finger on it but maybe worth looking at. Thankyou to the team!

Service: Glam Hotel did not honour the booking but instead they put me up at Smart Hotel next door. Hence the review is on Smart Hotel. No explanation was given by Glam except that they had issues with their reservation system. My friends checked in 1 day earlier with no issues. Smart only provided body shower gel. No soap toothbrush etc.i also could not adjust the room temperature. It was hot. Room was clean though.

I´m not sure how it is like to stay at Ostelzzz for several nights, but I find it a very convenient solution for me who arrived around midnight in Milan, and already had leave from Milano Centrale by noon on the next day. I had a proper sleep for one night in a capsule. It really was a hostel, but with so much better privacy. Staffs were extremely kind and helpful. They gave me a welcome drink. Online check-in in advance made my actual check-in so much easier. Had everything I needed, incl breakfast, towel too. Clean and well-organized. Breakfast was simple, but more than good enough for me. I wouln´t hesitate to choose Ostelzzz next time.

Great location and right near all transportation. It was a little loud from the street staying on the first floor so I would recommend staying on a higher floor.
