Casa del Balam Merida

We flew into Merida airport for the first time and liked the small size with fast customs upon entry. Stayed at Casa del B for two nights before heading out for our travels. Five states in five weeks for our driving adventure! Location is everything in Merida and we were right by several parks! Unfortunately there is a lot of road construction going on in town. The hotel has two small elevators and only one goes up to floor 6. Just quirky. There are many interesting antiques and artwork all around. The courtyard has a fountain, and a small dining area. The room was basic but well worth the bargain price per night. There is a refrigerator, blow dryer and soft towels, although no hand towel in the room. The pillows were hard but the mattress in our room was VERY comfortable and that is most important for us. The staff is friendly and helpful. It was nice to see that Diego still works there. We have stayed here before and had a newer room on a previous visit, but you get what you pay for! The windows do not open and there was a musty smell in the room, but the a c helped with the odor. Parking was available for a small fee. Most impressive though, was all the custom iron work. The light fixtures, headboard, and mirror trim was all hand formed. Even the lampshade was hand painted. The doors and furniture had heavy wood trim, and the closet doors were fancy. The attached restaurant has recently been updated too. It was a great value for our short stay. Btw it is across from the theatre which had a fire and is not open. The symphony was moved to a smaller theatre. I really hope they can restore it, it was so beautiful.
Wyndham Merida

This Wyndham in the heart of Merida was overall very nice with a superb staff on hand. A few snafus to mention… I am handicapped and their own ADA rooms are on the fourth floor. Who know whose idea that was! There is one elevator on each side of the hotel, and if the elevator is out, and you are on the fourth floor, you have to take the stairs because there is no connection to the other side of the building. So… of course, on our second day, both elevators were out. We requested that they move us to a room on the 1st floor. When we returned from our day’s activities, all of our stuff was moved to a new room, even though that room was not an ADA room. All good right? Not quite, as we are getting ready to head out that evening, we see a puddle of water in the bathroom…turns out there was a leak from the base of the toilet. The staff once again helped us to move to another room on the first floor. Overall, it’s also a well-kept hotel. But the building is quite old and could use some repairs. We ate at their restaurant only once, and it was not Wyndham quality food. Their brunch is a whopping 350 pesos, which given the food quality, is extremely overpriced. For breakfast, we strongly recommend going to the very nearby Flores Café. The rooms are nice; our first (ADA) room was actually larger than the room we were assigned on the first floor. The best part about the hotel was the staff. Extremely helpful and apologetic about the elevator situation. I give this hotel overall 4 stars; 5 for service; 3 for the ADA situation and 3 for the food.

We opted to get a room with two beds on the second floor, which was quite spacious and light. It was also away from the downstairs hub bub during breakfast. The beds were very comfortable, the bathroom attractive with plenty of hot water (although as in other places we stayed, the water has to run a little while to get hot). I liked that there were lots of places to put things, and the room was a pleasant place to retreat to at the end of the day. There were several outdoor seating areas, which we took advantage of since I sleep a bit later than my husband, who jumps on his computer early. The location is quite good, within easy walking distance of the main square, Paseo del Montejo Avenue, and many restaurants. One in particular, just down the street called Urban Bistro is a find! We ate there twice in our three days in Merida. We had a couple issues with the breakfast - not getting our orders right, and not very good coffee. The staff are lovely and very helpful - several speak very good English, which was helpful.

This place looks great on the internet. But, stay away. Spend your money elsewhere. We had a horrible experience for New Year's. A complete let down. I made reservations 3 weeks ahead and they still could not get it right: the service and attitude were horrible. One example of how the night went: They asked weeks before for any allergies. I let them know about my avocado allergy. What do I get for my first course of this5 course meal? Avocado. I explained to the waiter about my allergy. He came back with the same plate saying there was nothing they could do because the avocado was mixed in to the dish. ”But, I have an allergy, and I let you all know about this 3 weeks ago.” He shrugged, and that was basically his attitude the entire night. None of the courses came out at the same time. Mine (the vegan menu) continually came out much later than everyone else. He never offered us water or checked on us... I have never written a negative review, but I need to do so in this case because we felt robbed by this place: both financially and robbed of having a good New Year's experience. The bad management is obvious and in trickles down to the service at the table. Like another reviewer said: spend your money elsewhere! This place has beautiful pictures and the fame of enveloping you in a luxurious experience, which it may have had a while ago. But, it's not true now. Don't buy they hype: it's false.
Fiesta Americana Merida

Nice hotel with friendly service. I've stayed in Fiesta Americana hotels a lot and know generally what to expect. This one lives up to the high Americana standards. It is in a good location, near good restaurants, but not in the central area of town. Beds are very comfortable and rooms are nice. The bar had live music on Friday night and the band was great. Across the street is an outdoor restaurant that also had live music at night. The first floor of the Fiesta Americana hotel is all shops, so the actual hotel lobby is on the next floor. At the top of the escalator, in the lobby, there will be one or two people who will approach you and offer to help you with anything. They are very nice, but their goal is to sell you something like a timeshare. We refused to talk to them about that, so we never got the full explanation. We also got a phone call in our room, from the same people, telling us they had a free gift for us. We did ask these people for recommendations of local activities and they were very nice and helpful. Included was a light breakfast and snacks/drinks on the fifth floor. This was very convenient and the food was simple, but good. The only real surprise we had was at check out. We found that there is a charge for the self serve coffee in the room. I never use anything from the mini-bar or anything in the room that has an extra cost. I do not remember seeing anything about the coffee costing something. So many other places it is free/included. The hotel did reduce our charge for the coffee, but be aware that there is a charge.
