30-40 years ago, I would never stay anywhere except Marriott. It was synonymous with immaculate hotels at a fair price. But I feel Marriott has lost its way. The hotels are getting run down, and they surcharge you to death. This JW Marriott is an example. When I travel JW Marriott I expect top of the line. But I felt like I was at Disney where you pay a steep price to get in and everything is extra. Five hundred bucks a day, and then there is a fifty dollar a day mandatory resort fee. But the resort fee doesn’t even guarantee you a seat at the pool. 1/3 of the seats are 40 bucks each a day, as they are “premium seats. Had a hard time finding a seat. Crazy. I’m used to complimentary coffee at the front desk in the morning, but no, you gotta pay $5 for a cup of Joe. The daily resort fee gets you a beach umbrella, and a couple of beach seats, that’s it. You want to use the fitness center. There is a tiny one that’s free, the larger one is extra. The rooms are clean, but dated. My shower was lukewarm, and the towels were worn and scratchy. You want your park your car? Self parking is across the street, and was 40 a day, it was full. Valet parking is 50 a day. Hotel staff was friendly, but they really really want to sell you a time share. On the plus side, the resort is huge and nicely landscaped. Staff is friendly, but overworked, maid service was no show one day, 6 and 8 PM on two other days. The Breakfast buffet is reasonable at 40 per person, and it’s impressive, food and service were very good, I ate most of my meals across the street, DaVinci is superb Italian food. Marriott used to be my favorite hotel chain. Now I try to avoid it.
