Having written quite a few reviews of hotels on here I really had to think about what rating I could give to the Turquoise Hotel, Side, Turkey. It was billed by TUI at the time of booking as being a 5 Star resort (now 4T Plus) but quite as to who gave it this accolade is something of a mystery, we have stayed at 5 Star resorts in Asia and quite frankly there is no comparison whatsoever. We opted for a room upgrade, and if it was indeed an upgraded room I don’t think I would want to be in one of the lower graded ones. On arrival we were quite impressed by the smart and modern appearance of the Reception/Lobby area, after a quick bite to eat in the restaurant – 4 dishes on offer but it was getting on for 22:00, we were taken to our upgraded room. I am not quite sure what constituted the upgrade unless it was the soft close drawers in the plentiful storage furniture or the laminate wooden flooring. I believe the hotel is over 20 years old and the rooms are showing it. There were just 4 useable sockets in the room (no USB outlets) and one of those would not accept our converter plug but was happy with the kettle plug – odd! The socket on the hairdryer in the bathroom would not work with our toothbrush. Sticking with the bathroom the shower is somewhat old fashioned (from original build?) with a rather complicated control for the rain shower/ handheld. More importantly there does not appear to be any thermostatic control as the water temperature can go from cold to cool to scaldingly hot in an instant, temperature control very difficult to achieve. Additionally, it was extremely difficult not to flood the floor as the glass screen of the walk-in shower was about a foot too short. This is not really much different to many other hotels we have stayed in as whoever designs the walk-in showers probably never uses one themselves Without wishing this review to be all negative the staff, in the main, really make this hotel particularly in the restaurant with Mehmet and his bird calls, and Nazar who was only too pleased to chat and improve her English when service allowed, I think she was quite sorry to see us go! Special mention to the ‘egg’ lady whose name we sadly didn’t get, always pleased to see us, maybe because we were rather more polite than many of the other guests who appeared to have left their manners at home! On the subject of food, there is not much in the way of ‘English’ food, do not expect a fried breakfast, the nearest you will get is a fried egg on toast. So much of the food is geared for European tastes, particularly German. There are seven ‘Cuisine’ stations where live cooking takes place, but these are virtually the same all day, every day, much like the food on offer in the main part of the restaurant. I don’t think we have ever stayed where the food, certainly for lunch and dinner, is virtually repeated every day. The food is well cooked, but you almost know what you are going to have each and every day. There are some a la carte rest
