Lakeside Hotel and Conference Centre

Good: it is cheap, below the cost of usual Sydney accommodation; there is free on-site parking; it's a handy location, especially as there isn't much to choose from on the Sydney North Shore; It's close to public transport and shopping at Macquarie Centre; the location at Macquarie Uni is very nice - the outlook onto the lake and the landscaped gardens of the university are lovely; the staff are friendly. Handy to have an on-site gym if that's important to you. The bed was comfortable, all be it with a slightly sloping mattress, and it was relatively quiet although you can hear the M2 motorway traffic Bad: generally it is very run down - looks old and tired and in need of a good deep clean: the verandah tiles are stained with ancient water stains (see photo), there is concrete cancer; while the room itself was clean, and the sink and shower were clean, the bathroom floor had dead bugs and 'bits' on it (see photo) and the door had grubby fingerprints on it (see photo). The information in the folder in the room is out of date - the restaurant was NOT open for breakfast on Saturday and, while I didn't need dinner the night before, I think only the Indian take away was available. Maybe it only runs fully when there is a conference? The wifi dropped out twice during the evening; the television screen shows the Netflix and Disney and various logos but you can't get on to it. There is no USB charge points (see photo of work desk) - which surprised me as this is marketed as the Australian Graduate School of Management Hotel (!). The two worst things for me were: the security chain was broken (see photo) - not good for female travelling alone and the room opens to a public area with a sliding aluminium door; and the safe didn't work (see photo) -not good when travelling with a laptop and you want to go out. Even if the hotel is old, these two things are easy to fix. I didn't pass these things on to the 'management' because there was only a receptionist on duty and he wouldn't have been able to fix anything. Would I stay there again? it was cheap and convenient, so perhaps, in a room with a security chain, and now that I know what to expect. But for a hotel associated with a University Graduate School of Management I was surprised how bad it was.

Room was musty smelling, decor tired, things broken but not fixed (safe not working, no torch in wardrobe, intermittent wireless connection). No hand towels. Not mentioned when booking online that this is an unserviced room, and that you are expected to take your rubbish out (couldn't find the chute- not marked). Scant supplies- only setting for 4 (apartment was booked for 5), with only 2 glasses and 4 plates, 4 sets of cutlery. Not enough dishwashing powder to use the dishwasher. Disappointing, as it looks quite nice on the outside. Positives: has a pool, netflix (when it worked),outlook if not facing main road is green, apartment size good. Overall, has so much potential but just felt tired and out of date. When I tried to ring reception (during business hours) re internet, no answer. Not what I was expecting for the price I paid- all up nearly 1200 for 3 nights.

+Well equipped suites. Felt I was living at home in a different country. +Multiple entry parking provided and hotel is just opposite a mall. +Near to parks and the freeways - Check in time is not flexible. I landed in an early morning flight and waited nearly 6 hours. I would not mind paying a bit more like the late check out fee - Was told room service or housekeeping is only done once a week by front desk staff when I called them. So if your stay is more than 3 days, then good luck in keeping your room tidy and clean - Balcony was not so clean and saw dried up bird droppings on the glass. From the looks of it, it has been there quite sometime - Some of the utensils are not clean. For instance, I took out the knife from the drawer and it was oily and looked dirty

What a wonderful find. The beds were really comfortable, the room quiet. Everywhere was very clean and the staff very helpful. The only downside is that they don’t have a restaurant for dinner but luckily we found Lachlan’s a mere 300 metres away that had a delicious menu for dinner. A mere 20 minute taxi ride to the Accor Stadium made it the ideal location for us. The breakfast dining room was well presented with a very good range of cooked and buffet food.
Veriu Macquarie Park

I had not heard about this brand and never stayed at any of their Apartments before so i was going in there just based on the site photos and with not much expectations. But Veriu exceeded them. Extremely clean rooms and comfortable place to be at. The Metro station being right next to the Apartment was a massive plus for us. It was further from Airport and City but the connectivity made up for it. The Staff was extremely helpful and everyone was always ready to help. The Apartments were cleaned everyday to an amazing high standard so kudos all around. There was one day where the towels never got replaced and we were not told about it. That was the night when i contacted reception and the guy was not answering the phone. And when i went down the guy was rude as hell and dint bother saying sorry for not communicating and was more concerned about how he can avoid having a conversation and explain the situation. I dont remember his name but was an Asian dude. No complaints about anybody else. Overall though Veriu was excellent in providing a top notch service.
Holiday Inn Express Sydney Macquarie Park, an IHG Hotel

Firstly, this hotel is perfectly located for business travellers to Macquarie Park Business Centres. The hotel is 5 minutes away from offices, Macquarie Centre and train stations. Absolutely perfect for my work trip. There were some positives. Rooms are fine, completely what you would expect from a business hotel. Bed was comfortable, there was a TV that I never used, space to put luggage and hang up your clothes, a table and a chair etc. However, it goes down hill from there. I'll list the negatives 1 by 1: 1. One pillow had a very strong odour coming from it. Smelled like bad musty BO. I literally had to move the pillow into the cupboard as I couldn't stand the smell. However, this meant that I could smell this musty smell every time I came in and out of the room. 2. 1 of the provide bath towels had a big hole/tear in it. 3. Housekeeping made an error and did not provide shampoo but instead 2 conditioners. Easy enough, I called up reception and they said I have to come down to the reception to get it myself. Fine, went down and was given 1 bottle of shampoo. I went back upstairs to shower only to find that the shampoo given was pre-opened/pre-used. Terrible. After my shower, I went back down to speak to another receptionist who was apologetic and gave me 2 bottles of shampoo. 4. On my second day, I realised housekeeping had not come in, so I went down to speak to the reception again and was told that because of COVID, they only do housekeeping on after the 3rd day of your stay which made it null and void for me. 5. Fitness centre was adequate but they did not replenish the towels and did not clear used towels regularly. On my second day, I had left a used towel on the side as the bin was full. On my third day, the bin was still full and my previous towel still sitting there in the same position I had left it in. Forth day, no more clean towels. 6. If they were so concerned about COVID, they would have more regular cleaning of public areas like the gym and in the hall way where an empty glass and cup set for 3 whole days. The lack of cleaning in public areas to me is unacceptable in the hospitality industry now. All in all, I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone given my concerns above, especially the lack of cleanliness while we are dealing with an epidemic.
