Hotel Presidente Luanda

Another business trip to Angola. Was not the right time to be in Angola or for that matter anywhere in Africa due to the new variant of the virus but the trip was very essential and had to travel with all the precautions. I chose to stay at Hotel President although there were other choices. Since i was staying for the first time in this hotel i did not know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. The hotel is old, but all the rooms are renovated, and the bathrooms decked in white marble tiles that give the bathrooms a bright airy look. The hotel itself is located close to Luanda Port and most of the rooms give a sweeping view of the Luanda waterfront called as” Marginal”. Look at the pictures taken from my room. I was fortunate to get a corner room that gave a 180-degree view of the Luanda bay. The room was small, but the size of the room was more than compensated by the large bay windows that made the room look bright and airy. Especially good if one is quarantined in the room for 2 weeks and not allowed to leave the room. I was fortunate to not be in quarantine. The bathroom was nicely renovated with wall to floor white marble tiles with large windows. A welcome respite from the dark dingy bathrooms in some of the hotels that i had stayed. Unfortunately, there was no hot water kettle or coffee making services provided in room and neither was there any iron/ironing board. I have stayed in hotels that did not have ironing board/iron provided but water kettle and coffee was always provided. I have therefore deducted one star. The Eight Floor houses the restaurants and the bar. Restaurants are closed for dinner due to COVID restrictions but open for breakfast. Breakfast spread is good but will be better if they can add more varieties like sliced breads and milk and cereals. Service staff are courteous and speak good English. Room TV has international TV channels available and if you are bored with a little bit of ingenuity can hook up your laptop to watch Netflix. Overall a pleasant stay at a slightly pricey hotel.
Hotel Alvalade

I stayed there on business between may and July 2022 Overall very nice stay I was lucky enough to have a suite which made the long term Stay easier Very friendly helpful staff .breakfast service was good with a plentiful choice . I was on a BB evening meal package which includes the evening buffet each evening . Over all it was very good but after 8 weeks it got a little repetitive but still nice food .This is only my opinion . There was a good happy hour 5pm -7 at the pool bar which was usually busy with the expat regulars I’d be very happy to return to Avalade Big thank you to the door staff who were always cheerful and welcoming each day
Palmeiras Suite Hotel

A fabulous hotel with a very professional management where everything...and great. Staff brings professionalism together with the ability to welcome and sympathy of the African and Angolan people in particular, which is an ideal solution. I would have several names to be highlighted but I will not do so to be unfair to all the others, give the reception staff, to the restaurant, room service and also including sympathy and pretability of the room staff. Food is excellent, varied and abundant, the timetables always adjusted the needs of travel and international flights, even the fifth fair party, sober, pleasant and with quality groups. We had a problem of misunderstanding with the medical company for Covid19 collection and testing, which was quickly and conveniently resolved by the reception.
RK Suite Hotel

If looking for a comfortable, clean bed, at an affordable rate, then this is the place. There is not much glamor here. The suite is equivalent to a one bedroom apartment. However, no coffee was provided just tea, no sockets in the kitchen, drinking water was not replenished after the second night. There is no view at all, in fact kept the curtains drawn. I asked for a room change since the hotel was very empty but was given an excuse about the other side of the hotel being noisy. That was not the case. There is no sea view room given the hotel is in downtown. Service is okay but breakfast is the same limited selection every night. You get either, fish, chicken or steak for lunch and dinner. Cable barely works and has a frosty picture, only news channel available was BBC. It's close to the airport, however, so not much traffic. ATM is nearby and a pharmacy if you need one. It was a decent stay and definitely a three star as there is much to improve on. Language is a barrier as staff know limited English. The WiFi was horrible, hardly worked in the room and kept disconnecting, had to keep finding a new connection. The hotel is old, come with an international adapter as one is not provided. Note that the hotel does not have a PDQ machine, payment is made on an online portal.
Hotel Trópico

I’ve stayed at the Tropico several times on business trips, typically my stay is between 2-3 weeks so it’s important to choose the right place. Not only is the Tropico conveniently located in the heart of the city but it’s got a chilled vibe. Rooms are spacious and cleaned daily to a high standard, staff are great, friendly and approachable. Breakfast is really good, bar snacks are good, the only criticism is that the menu is very limited, especially if you’re staying for a long period. Definitely worth a stay.
Art House

I spent 2 nights here. From my arrival, it was disappointing & frustrating. They have two large American Express logo signs at reception, but they don't take AmEx cards. I tried to pay with 2 different visa cards, but their card machine kept failing. They seemed shocked that I didn't have 198k kwanza on me, when they claimed to accept cards for payment. I asked where the nearest ATM was, and they insisted that I needed a taxi to get there. The taxi drove me half way across the city for an ATM, as we drove past multiple ATMs. Once back at the hotel they demanded that I pay an extra 2k kwanza for the taxi, and I refused, and they let it go. Based on other recent reviews, this seems like a common scam the hotel is running where they know their card machine isn't working, and then charge extra for a taxi to get cash. The remainder of the actual check in process was equally bad. They tried to sell me day tours, and to book their chef for dinner (money for them!), but never bothered to provide the wifi password, or breakfast hours. The room itself was huge, but in poor condition. Lots of water damage in the bathroom, the mattress was very old and beat up with nothing but springs left (no padding). The roof top bar that they promote so heavily seems to be completely abandoned. Its filthy up there, with rotting wood, splintered benches, garbage everywhere, and mold growing on the hot tub. The breakfast was fairly basic, and inconsistent from one day to the next. One day there was fresh fruit in a bowl & hard boiled eggs, none the next day (and nothing to replace them). There was bottled drinking water 1 day, the next, one had none. There are water coolers on each floor, but most were empty. The place calls itself an 'art house' but most of the so called art are amateurish murals painted on the walls. The actual art that they claim is for sale is basically just 2 artists, and most of it has been hanging for years (nothing is selling). My room was facing the road, and there was plenty of noise from cars & people 24/7. I was awakened at 6am one day when there was construction noise next door. This might have been a great, unique hotel long ago, but its falling apart with dishonest, incompetent staff today.
