Be careful of being unknowingly charged with a ‘discussionary charge of tips’ (supposed to be A Conpulsory charge of tips, don’t be fool by the name, it is non-discussionary) AFTER CHECKING OUT of the hotel. I was being charged with a discussionary charge of the tips on the credit card automatically without being informed upfront after I checked out and left the hotel. When I checked out, i was informed at the counter that they were closing their account for previous day and they would help me check out my room and email me the invoice of my stay after they finished closing account. As a result, I innocently left the hotel since I thought a 5-star hotel would not have anything gone wrong. However, I was totally wrong until I saw extra charges on my credit card while not receiving any so called invoice from the hotel at all. I then reached out to Trip.com to request for the invoice that they have promised to send to me and it was then I was informed that the extra charges were from a discussionary charge of tips. I wasn’t happy about the way this was done hence I requested for a refund for this since it clearly stated this is a DISCUSSIONARY fee, not a compulsory fee. However, I was informed that this is a Non-refundable fee and my request was denied. Out of so many hotels I have stayed, it is unbelievable that in a 5-Star hotel, I was forced to pay something that wasn’t even being informed upfront. In addition, with the fee name suggested, it is a discussionary charge of tips NOT a compulsory charge of tips, the hotel has forced the customers to pay it as COMPULSORY CHARGE OF TIPS. In addition, the hotel services were very inefficient and lot of rooms for improve. We ordered for an in-room meal and we were told that it would take about half an hour to deliver. Hence we waited, and until an hour later, there was no update on our meal and we had to make a call again to check for the progress of our meal. It was then we knew there was a delay in the meal. By the time we done with our meal, we made the call again to request for someone to collect the plates, we literally waited for more than an hour and had to call twice before someone came to pick up the plates. This shouldn’t have been the service received in a 5-star hotel and the worst of all, the hotel should have more transparency in their charges and should have informed the customers on the charges upfront before the actual charging. When we signed for the amount paid for the meal, there were no statement on the discussionary charge of tips at all, and we didn’t expect there would be as we were not even informed. It is not that we are unwilling to give the tips and we did give the tips during the stay. However, it made us very uncomfortable that we weren’t informed anything upfront and it was charged to my credit card AFTER we CHECKED OUT of THE HOTEL. It made us feeling very unsafe to provide the credit card to the hotel as they can charge whatever charges they want after checking out the hotel. In addition, it is a discussionary charge, isn’t it should be discussed before I was being charged? If not it should be called a a compulsory charge of tips.

Dolphin Inn - the Lodge

I have more relaxed room requirements. I think as long as the bedding is relatively clean1, I am more satisfied with a separate bathroom. For some reason, I had to leave Shakespeare, move down from the top floor, check out, and wait three hours to check in with the dolphin. This time it's good, it's arranged on the first floor 884. The space is larger than Shakespeare's 441, and the bed is more comfortable.

The reception staff in general are very friendly and accommodating with a particular mention of the young guy with slim built and glasses. He really made effort to accommodate me by having my room ready way before their 4 pm checking- in time. I appreciated so much what he and his team mates did. The location is just fabulous with Paddington station just next to the hotel. I was able to use it to get in and out of the hotel during my stay. Worth noting that there are two mini supermarkets inside the station, making shopping for bits and pieces so easy. The draw back is that there is no fridge in the room which is kind of rare for a hotel, let alone one of the Hilton hotels. The amenities really should include a pair of slippers for guests. Overall, I had an enjoyable stay there and won’t hesitate to go back there if I ever visit London again.

The impression of the second visit was very bad. When I checked in at the counter, I suddenly said that I would charge a ten-pound service fee for my card. I didn’t understand that the counter was still very tough, and I was not sure if I would refund afterwards. I was arranged to the basement room, and the air was too stuffy. Open the window, the room is small. The free luggage storage service is good, but who you meet at the counter depends entirely on luck.

The hotel has a great location next to Paddington station, which is where you arrive with the Heathrow express or the Elisabeth line. The staff is friendly and service minded. We did not have breakfast at the hotel, since there are plenty of nice options in the area. Be aware that the rooms have next to no space for hanging or storing your clothes, and there is no air conditioning. Also, if you have a room facing the street you will hear a lot of noice. It is a busy area around the hotel, both day and night. Rooms facing the back are much more quiet (our kids had a room with that location, while me and my wife had one towards the street). All in all, a good option for an extended weekend or similar. Perhaps not to recommend in the middle of the summer, unless you are ok with a warm room.

This quirky little hotel is a 30 second walk from Paddington Station which is why I chose this hotel. I was booking 3 rooms for 1 night and this was by far the cheapest. If you want a longer stay and a spa hotel, maybe use your common sense and pay spa hotel prices, but this hotel is perfect as a base if you are using it as a hotel and not spa weekend. The rooms are clean, well equipped, modern and the staff are amazing. There are plenty of amenities on the door step (literally) and any issues or questions about anything whatsoever, the kind staff will go out of their way to assist you. We had 3 rooms and a couple of small issues my posh children had were sorted immediately. Give this place a go as a perfect base, if you want a spa, pay 4 times the price. I live a 5 star life and can afford by using my common sense and use 3 star hotels when I need a nice base for flying visits. Thanks again staff, you were amazing.
