This is my 2nd time to come to this hotel, although the first time to stay over night too. Let’s start with the hotel itself: located in a very good area close to many shops, barber, tattoo shops, close to Selwyn Samuel Centre and manageable walk or short drive from the beach too. It has a limited car park in the back, close to the reception. Seems like the bar and the reception was refurbished to some extent. The hotel has function room, and the buffet type of restaurant, and plenty space to sit inside or outside in the bar garden. Sadly, it’s a place where people come drinking excessively, so until the bar opening hours it was very noisy, and seemingly the bar staff didn’t do much about it, or maybe they are not trained well how to diffuse noisy people. My room was number 4, which has no air conditioning or any fan coolers to tackle with the immense heat in the summer, therefore, my comfort was impacted by this. The windows cannot be open much, so not even a cross-wind attempt helped to sleep well on this occasion. The room seemed like refurbished though! The furnitures and material used in the room has a very nice and calming feeling, yet, modern and stylish. The fridge was filled with a pre-filled cool water. I wasn’t able to use the TV, the remote controller seems like broken or not working properly. The room is equipped with a water kettle and Nespresso machine, with different type of sugars and sweeteners, selection of tea and coffee. The bathroom is small, but very clean and practical, and the towels were clean, and soft too. On the other hand: as you walk to the rooms you can sense that it is under refurbishing or maybe an under-managed staff, because the carpet or rug on the floor is incredibly dirty, even the vacuum cleaner was left there. Some decorations, or door steps also show that some works are underway. Not sure if that side of the building is in use or not where the rug is uneven but be careful, the rug at places isn’t even, a really serious trip hazard. When I came to the reception to check out, it took a total of 13 minutes to talk to someone. I rang the bell multiple times, once the young gentleman who checked me in originally walked by told me he is getting his colleague to help me. I paid 85 for a single night here, no breakfast, no room entertainmens, no air conditioner or fan cooler, while my friends stayed in a different hotel close by at a much better price and amenities, so I don’t think I will return here.

A night out not spoilt but your hotel is missing something. We visited your restaurant but it was more like a rugby club, tv blasting with a group watching the rugby in the restaurant and not in the bar. Oh well maybe everything else will be better. Nope. Menus dirty, sticky, tacky with beer stains and oil. Maybe laminate these as you can dirt, grease and grime off them. Tables were not laid for service, knives, forks, serviettes missing. Tables were dirty. I gave myself opportunity to be impressed I wasn’t hopefully your standards will increase to go with your lovely food. I didn’t raise cleanliness with your staff as they were rushed off their feet with one table booked. Things like this should be standard practice cleanliness, tables clean ready for service

The Staff were lovely. New rooms recently decorated really high standard. Food amazing both breakfast and dinner. Portions were great right down to having a proper glass of OJ in the morning, food was fresh not out of some freezer. I would say the steak was the best I have ever had. Clean tidy, friendly place can’t fault them. They are still hard at work renovating a few areas however making fantastic progress. Would definitely stay again. I wish them every success in the future and have no hesitation recommending this hotel & team. You can find them on Facebook under the New Thomas Arms

Go somewhere else. Booked at the last minute as my wife had an early appointment nearby. Looked very shabby on arrival with dirty laundry stacked up outside, went to our room & passed more laundry stacked on the landing, presumably clean. Room was not the best, stains on the carpet & walls, total lack of any toiletries. Terrible night sleep as doors banging at 4am & people moving around. We had booked breakfast but after seeing the state of the place & speaking to the gentleman who appeared to be cooking it we decided to skip it & go elsewhere, he could certainly do with a lesson in customer care. It was probably a nice place 30 years ago. Don’t think we’ll be staying at a Marstons hotel again.

I implore you all to read the honest reviews that encapsulate how I also feel after my one night stay for business. Look elsewhere; you will not regret it! Check in was okay after we eventually managed to park in the small and badly laid out car park. The room was pretty disgusting, tired and with a really bad smell coming from the bathroom. Others have commented on the complete lack of toiletries; what on earth is that all about! I’m glad I had a premonition and packed my son’s lynx shower gel! We didn’t eat that night but had intended to eat breakfast as briefed by the barman. We came down at 8:00 to complete darkness; nobody about at all other than a sign saying we were being watched on CCTV! Went back upstairs and came back down at 8:30 to check out. Still nobody! We left a note asking for our invoice to be emailed to us. Despite a number of phone calls since where they have promised to email us, nothing has been received. We really should raise a complaint against Marstons or the hotel direct but given the generic replies to other reviews I doubt it would make any difference. I don’t write many reviews but felt the need to do so this time to save others a similar experience! Shocking all round!

The curtains were half hanging from the slider, a lot of light came through. The room was very noisy from the traffic from outside, I could hear people talking in the other rooms. The carpet had every kind of stain you can imagine. Every day I was there there were piles of bed linen and towels in the hallways, very messy. In the bathroom the bath was broken, the sealant seams were coming loose and were cracking. The mattress on my bed felt like it had never been replaced. There was also a very oppressive smell and a strong sewage smell for the last 2 days. Finally, all rooms are the same, whether you take a normal, family or suite, the suite is more expensive but was exactly the same as a normal room of my traveling companion. I feel ripped off and cheated. Please let me know if there is a way to get all or part of my money back. I don't like coming here anymore. The Travelodge in the center was better than this hotel.

I think our stay here rates as one of the worst hotel experiences ever. We were greeted well - stayed in the family room. There were cobwebs everywhere and thick dust on the skirting boards. The bathroom was very down at heel , not even a bar of soap available. No towel hooks, dirty shower hose and bath grouting. To turn on the hot tap you needed to hold the nozzle otherwise it revolved. At one point we had hot water coming out of the cold tap . The exterior was untidy and overgrown with overflowing bins near the back entrance . Weeds and cigarette buts, cans and litter everywhere. Inside there were abandoned chairs and general mess near the stairwell and the tables were not properly cleared with crumbs and sauce bottles scattered about. We had booked two nights with breakfast. No one turned up to cook breakfast until 9 am, the place was dark and deserted until the cook turned up . I’ve given one star as the breakfast when it arrived was good. The following morning no one had arrived by 9.10 am so we decided to leave without the breakfast we had booked. We left a confused German traveller wondering where everyone was and looking for something to eat. He set off the alarm in his search for the cook. There is no one on the premises overnight and it appears you’ll be lucky to find anyone in the day. It’s shameful that Marston's continue to charge full price for a stay here . Do not go there!!

Very expensive for what it was! Paid £125 for one night. The place was very tired, dated and dirty. The curtains were hanging off the pole letting all the light in from the wall lights of the pub. It’s very noisy as the windows are thin and it’s on a main road. The main thing that baffled me was no toiletries at all, not even hand soap in the toilet!! The bathroom had mouldy black grout, the tap was hanging on, the extractor fan was gross and full of dirt/dust and surrounded by huge cobwebs!
