Stayed here on the outskirts of city centre and caught train into centre. Must say we were greeted and checked in by Elle and that was a smooth fantastic experience and she was there throughout our 1st night to answer any questions we had. Breakfast we were met by Stephen who sorted everything out and arranged for our breakfasts to be as we wanted. The 2nd morning breakfast was presented by another Stephen who continued the brilliant service we received throughout our stay. There are others whose name’s we did not get who also were very friendly and helpful. So overall we had an 5* break and would highly recommend the Childwall Abbey hotel for excellent value and top class service.

The only positive was that the room looked pleasant. There was a lot of noise from the next door room as he kept his door open. The plumbing is seriously bad - every time any room runs water or flushes the loo, the noise is awful and reverberates around all the rooms- and particularly noisy in own room. The sink smelled awful every time I ran the water and there was no plug to try and block the bad drain smell - it needed a GOOD clean! The single bad sagged in the middle. The continental breakfast took over 15 minutes to be served - worst cappuccino I've ever been served, frozen fruit and yoghurt inedible - I left it all uneaten / not drunk. Worst hotel breakfast I've been served in many years. Pub wasn't even very clean - cleaners were in cleaning while we ate breakfast - not very pleasant to watch.

We should have walked out when we noticed crumbs all over the seats and the tables were sticky. Still, picked the least dirty and sticky and ordered. Starters were fine but forgot an element. Salad on the lasagne was black and one leaf, even eaten by some creature or other. What took the biscuit was the small dead fly on my daughter's plate. Told the waitress and showed her, she apologised, it wasn't her fault after all. Said she'd speak to the chef and manager. No one came over. We left. £70 I wished I'd spent elsewhere.

Any chance you could ask the staff to smile now and again? The young girl we dealt with for our food order was so miserable. If something had happened in her life to affect her that much, you really should have given her the evening off to recover. Fish and chips delivered quite speedily, but cold peas, over cooked batter, no lemon, no tarta sauce, visibly greasy plates, visibly greasy cutlery. My wife and I tried your chicken kebabs. I assume that one portion of chicken had been divided between us both, there was hardly any..!! The extra maple sauce was not delivered, honestly, what a debacle, and really poor value for money. Seriously guys, your standards make Wetherspoons look like a Michelin star restaurant.

Visited today, tried to order food but to be told they had no steaks, no lasagna, no fish, so we opted for other meals they did have. It was a load of rubbish, I have had better microwave meals than what we received, they should be ashamed of themselves but get the feeling they won’t be because they don’t give a toss. (No asking if everything was ok, but I am not surprised they don’t ask, as they know what feedback they will get) Something has definitely changed hear, new manager or new chefs maybe? This used to be the place to go but now, no chance. I thought it was strange that the place was very quite with most tables empty (this never used to be the case, it used to be chocker). As soon as we walked in, there was no other customers waiting at the bar (usually you can’t get to the bar it’s that busy). Chips where cheap supermarket type chips and the “chefs” couldn’t even cook those properly (they where raw in the centre), pie pastry was like glue (microwaved). I wish I had taken some photos now to show you all. Cheesy garlic bread was all floppy like it had been microwaved. The bar staff must be new as it took them ages to put the drinks through the till, plus I asked for a Pinot white wine but was given a blush. I also noticed that hardly anyone else was eating, just having drinks and now I know why. It’s a bloody shame as used to be great for food. Oh well that’s another customer lost unfortunately when it comes to wanting a meal.

Sometimes when you don’t expect much you have the best of times. First shout out to Jason - fabulous member of bar staff. We had 3 double rooms & a family room which were clean and tidy and beds were comfy. Food was pub grub menu but very good had a variety of food requirements all catered for. Was very busy for food service. Parking across the road was busy but we got 2 spaces. Strange but nice walk around the graveyard after dinner. Breakfast was excellent with more mushrooms than your heart could wish for. £2.50 for kids breakfast - bargain ! Second shout to Dave ! The cleaning lady was doing an outstanding job on the Saturday morning after what had been a busy night. We would recommend anyone stay here. It’s a hotel above a pub not a luxury hotel. As others have said probably waiting for a ‘make over’ Interesting point post box ! And the Beatles - obviously.
