Really a tale of two halves. This is a magnificent old building, set in very pleasant grounds, with ample parking, and very close to the city of Bazas, which in itself is very picturesque. We were greeted warmly and shown to slightly small but very well equipped and above all very clean rooms. The room was air conditioned with a small balcony, and particularly the bathroom was of a high standard. The staff, particularly in the bar, were helpful and friendly. English was spoken and my schoolboy French was tolerated! We enjoyed a couple of beers in the sunshine on the comfortable terrace. We ate in the hotel restaurant and unfortunately this did not match the expectations set by the rest of the property. The amuse-bouche was quite tasteless, entrees were average at best, and the steak I was served was tough and quite tasteless. Neither of us finished our main course. The hotel needs to do much, much better in this area. The food offer is simply not good enough. Once I got into bed it was clear that the bed had some kind of plastic mattress protector. Sure it prolongs the life of the bed but it doesn’t make for a comfortable nights sleep, for me at least. We did not risk the breakfast, and my friend and I both noted that at no point did any of the staff ask it we had enjoyed our stay, or whether everything was good. My recommendation - by all means stay here but please, eat in town.
