This is a wonderful inn in the heart of the Cotswolds, and my destination for one night’s stay after walking across country. I was partly drawn to it by Giles Coren’s ecstatic review of the food. I arrived to discover a cosy, kindly hostelry, a perfect hideaway, with aromas of woodsmoke and promising dinners to come. My room was delightful (though there is a smell of sewage on the way up…) and I had a very comfortable night’s sleep - except for one tiny thing - if you leave the window open, it rattles and needs tightening up. (Sorry, I meant to mention this when I checked out.) The St John claret is excellent, a very good and affordable option. For main, I had the venison loin with salsify, horseradish, bacon and a side of creamed spinach. Although the venison could have been a little warmer, this was a magnificent meal. The horseradish was very sharp but the balance of flavours worked beautifully. Pear sorbet to follow also unusual and delicious. My only disappointment was the cheese selection. Only two cheeses, both of them mild to the point of blandness. For that price, and given how much skill went into the main, I thought this was really very poor. I’d always expect three cheeses, and traditionally a cheddar, a blue and a soft cheese. This was just a soft and what looked like perhaps Ashcombe. At least it was served at room temperature and not straight out of the fridge however, as so many places insist on doing. The atmosphere was very genial, and the service was perfect, very attentive and friendly. And at breakfast, the little-known but charming “Path Towards Tomorrow” by Damien Montagu was playing, a favourite of mine. I would definitely stay again - the cheeseboard was the only misstep for me and all the more because everything else was so right.

What the hell has happened to this place, this used to be the place we would send friends and family for a great meal, we went there this evening for dinner and it was the first time ever none of us finished our meals, steaks were tough and un rested. Pizzas were covered on cheap cheese, chips were cold, flat breads were stodgy and all the food was mediocre at best. There were no adults working just kids who dealt with us badly… the woman who seemed in charge took no interest in tables at all, it was just a really bad experience.

Disappointing stay at the Bell where we have stayed many times before and indeed was one of our favourite places to stay. Very poor communication before our stay .As noted by other guests our email was not responded to ..Once this was sorted by telephone we were asked to preorder for our dinner choices but not told to choose from the a la carte nenu despite it being a Sunday ,nor were we provided any information on the Specials where a large amount of the choices are placed .Despite the pre order one of the starters was not available on the day .Our waiter on the night was excellent however we were never offered a dessert menu . Staff were inattentive at breakfast we were constantly asking for bowls glasses bread tea coffee etc . Despite our booking including free breakfast we were charged for hot items and they had run out of sausages to boot !!This charge has not been incurred on previous visits and the waitress apologised for not mentioning this to us pre order . We complained but were told this was a new policy since the beginning of the year .We followed this with an e-mail but got no reply .******* have since reimbursed us the £90! overcharge . The rooms have been redecorated and the showers renovated but personally I do not think they warrant the increased room rates .

Sewage smell as you arrive very off putting anyway table was booked, both had pizza which were good a little more choice of pizzas would be nice, service was fine had bread and a small amount of just olive oil which came on a small plate! Very expensive wine £12 & £8 for a 250ml & 125ml respectively did ask about the cost and was told it was a pinot noir! it certainly wasn't a good pinot noir! the house wine isn't much cheaper!

We booked 2 nights as we were going to our grandsons wedding. Arrived the night before so we could take our time getting ready the next day. Only to find we couldn't have a shower as the water was boiling hot and we could not get it any cooler. Informed the staff who said there had been other complaints with regards this shower. We were not offered another room and had to wash our hair and ourselves in a tiny sink. Nothing was done that day, so again could not shower the next day. We emailed the establishment twice and they have not even had the curtesy to reply. Obviously customer satisfaction is way down there list of priorities.

Stayed here one night for over the Jubilee long weekend. A very comfortable room - 4 - good bathroom - nice shower and a comfortable bed. As the food s so good here we knew breakfast would be good - it wasn't - it was superb. Some of the best bacon I have ever had. A huge portion too!

We love the Bell. It’s one of our family treats and today was very disappointing. The menu doesn’t seem to have changed, our roast lamb was very over cooked and service was slow and didn’t happen unless we asked someone. It’s always been worth the drive to go there but now I’m not so sure. Expensive too.
