Logis - Hôtel & Restaurant le Bellevue

La Bouille is a very pleasant riverside village just outside Rouen, with several good restaurants and hotels and a few shops. It is also a very convenient place to stop when driving from Calais to the south/ centre of France. The Hotel Bellevue is good value, friendly, clean, characterful but slightly dated, which we prefer to anonymous corporate hotels. Good buffet breakfast. They also serve dinner. On street parking just outside the hotel (if you’re luck / time it right) or at the nearby ferry terminal. Rooms facing the river Seine have a lovely view - they face east, so get early sunrise and hot quickly in the summer (no air conditioning, but there was a fan). En-suite room with satisfactory shower, toilet, sink, etc.

Very convenient stopover for first or last night from or to Calais. Great riverside location in charming village. Parking (street only and free) might be a bit hit or miss though on our visit in August we had no problems getting right outside but if you do have to use the ferry terminal parking (also free?) it would be a bit of a hike with luggage. Warm and efficient check in and the the lift was welcome for elderly legs. The room was modest and simple and perhaps a bit dated but had all the essentials and was clean and well maintained with a great river view. So far so good. Then we had dinner in the restaurant and things changed from perfectly OK to outstanding. Our party of four all had different main courses and all agreed that we had rarely if ever enjoyed a meal more. The ingredients and cooking were superb with a subtlety and complexity way beyond expectations in an hotel in this price range. For example my wife and had different fish dishes both served with a risotto but a bit of cross tasting established that the these accompaniments, both excellent, had distinctly different flavours, obviously no mass production here. The service and charm of the young waitress matched the quality of the food and the whole team from boss to cleaner were friendly, helpful and efficient. We slept well with no outside or inside noise though the wall thickness might be an issue if you get a noisy neighbour breakfast did not disappoint and the bill was more than reasonable. Definitely somewhere worth a return visit for the experience as well as the convenience.

This is one of those now rare family-run French hotels and it is a gem. It is in the pretty village of La Bouille right on the Seine near to Rouen. Our room overlooked the Seine and was clean and well-appointed without being luxurious. The restaurant is very good - we had two excellent dinners there. Breakfast too is very good, and the staff are charming and helpful. Previously we have stayed in Rouen as we travelled down through France and returned, but in future we shall stay here. Highly recommended.
