Kyoto Machiya Fukune

The flat is over 100 years old and it was nice to live in such an authentic Japanese style place. However, the open air bath was not hot enough and it was quite cold to sleep downstairs with futons as the windows did not have good insulation and the heating was not good enough. Overall, it’s a good experience.

I would not recommend staying at Kyoto Machiya Fukune. The staff is very nice, the tubs are pretty, and the place is clean and well-located. But if I was staying in the area again, I would book an upscale Japanese hotel with a bath instead. It was loud. The tea ceremony was not actually a tea ceremony. Dinner was nicely presented and tasted good, but the parts of it that were intended to be hot were cold. The Japanese style breakfast was great. But still, the overall experience was average — and it is too pricey to justify the expense.

Wonderful, private feeling stay while in a central location in Kyoto. The dinner and breakfast were excellent and a very special way for my husband and I to experience traditional Japanese food. Outdoor bath was so nice.

Location is a far walk from train station, its subjective but it’s about a 12 min walk. We paid about $950 sin dollars for a night to accommodate 2 adults and 2 teens. Two persons have to sleep on level 1, at living area while two others on level 2. The stairs up to level 2 is way too steep, especially when you want to get down. Be really careful. The wash basin area on level 2 was not cleaned properly. It was dusty and have mold-looking stuff in corners. It is otherwise quite modern as it has toiletries and stuff. I find the place tight with not much room for 4 luggage. The staff are friendly although you don’t know where they are stationed as you could only reached out to them over phone at a unmanned reception station. The lady whom came over to teach us how to make green tea was very nice and speaks good English.

Welcome tea ceremony, open air bath, complimentary drinks in the mini fridge, luggage lockers available upon checkout, loved everything about our stay! Amazing property, hospitality and customer service!

This was our first stay in Kyoto after arriving from Tokyo. It was a bliss! We really needed this agter a busy city, to relax and enjoy the hot tub outdoors. I'd definitely stay at this place again in the future and i have to say, the matcha tea experience was amazing. Both the hosts were extremely friendly and spoke English. Theres also some lockers you can use after checking out to explore the area a bit more. Everything we wanted to do was walkable as well, such as Gion, Nishiki market and some beautiful temples.

Thoroughly enjoyed this accommodation. It was clean and located on a quiet street. The host was also extremely nice and was very accommodating.
