Following a recommendation by friends, we spent 4 nights at the Glenburn for our trip to Kolkata. The hotel occupies the top three floors of an office block on Russel Street, right in the centre of Colonial Calcutta, so very convenient for visiting the historic monuments, as well as the commercial areas around it – something appreciated by my wife! On the outside it is simply seen as a glass-fronted building, but the contrast on arriving on the 8th floor to reception was amazing. The hotel is beautifully presented, both the public areas and rooms are stylish and comfortable, and given the usual bedlam at street level, a true oasis of peace and tranquillity. Our room overlooked the Victoria Monument and Eden Gardens Cricket Stadium (unfortunately no cricket was being played in it) as well as some of the surrounding buildings, it was large, comfortable and well equipped, as well as being extremely quiet, so we had a good night’s sleep. Breakfast was served to order, no buffet, and the evening meal excellent, a fusion of western and Indian tastes. Afternoon tea was offered each day, a mixture of savoury and sweet “nibbles” (which in no way does them justice), the tea coming from the owner’s tea plantation in Darjeeling. Overall an excellent stay, made by the efforts of the staff, who were on hand to ensure every effort was made to make our stay memorable. This was very important when my wife went down with a bug and was room bound for a day, and we were overwhelmed by the support. A very highly recommended stay,
