Yakety Yak Hostel

Great balcony area to hang out. Lovely, welcoming staff. Dorms feel really cozy. I felt very comfortable here. Hostel was in a great location. Bathrooms were very clean. Cool vibe. I would recommend to any first time travellers to Kathmandu.

(This might be long. They deserve it. 😌) I can't say enough good things about my stay. The staff are wonderful! They don't even feel like staff, they're so on it and warm. This is my first hostel experience and it was better than I imagined! The team at Yakety Yak Hostel put their best foot forward. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed but they are on it to take care of your needs (directions; good places to eat/visit; tips on local discounts and events; etc.) They also have a dedicated Travel Desk to set you up on whatever short or day-long tour you might like. (I went on a jet tour and road cable cars, just to name a few.) There's someone at the front desk 24/7 to guide you. Management were easy to get in touch with through WhatsApp before I arrived. And it was a fairly smooth transition from the Tribhuvan International Airport to the YY's front desk There used to be a chef here but no longer. They do have a bar with a fair selection of soft drinks and spirits. Other than that, you'll have to eat out everyday. But with several eateries and cafe's below and next to the hostel, that won't be an inconvenience at all! Granted, the hostel itself is kinda bare bones but a lot of good times where had here, I just know it. The beds are all white, comfy and clean. Towels provided. Hot showers available. It does get pretty cold here but there are remote control room heaters in the dorms to balance out the draft in the hallways and lobby after hours. There are lockers in the dorm big enough to fit 1 checked suitcase. If that's not enough, the front desk will hold on to larger luggage for you. YY Hostel has individual rooms too for all the privacy and convenience you want. I've been traveling abroad for one reason or another most of my adult life. And this isn't my first trip to Asia. So, I hope that add weight when the super friendly, charming, knowledgeable staff at Yakety Yak Hostel made this whole trip for me. I doubt my trip to Nepal could have been better if I started out staying elsewhere. Thank you so very much!

Great hostel in the Heart of Thamel. Thanks first to the lovely staff: R/Yakesh, Hrithik, Joti & Alina: they will allow your stay to be super-pleasurable. Friendly, fun, helpful with all sorts of Nepali info. (Sorry it took me so long to scrawl a review, folks: I was there for nearly a week in Oct 23; now it's Jan 24; but better late than never.) Some key benefits of staying here apart from the abovementioned lovely human yakky beings: Thamel is backpacker central, and Kathmandu is hectic, yet just through a well-maintained passageway & up a couple of flights of stairs is a safe haven of calm (not that Kath is dangerous - folk are so friendly, not too pushy, even in tourist areas, gentler than Indian comparisons - but it can wear down energy levels). There's a safe ATM area at the passage entrance where guards are at helping hand, 3 restaurants in the building, a fair variety of cuisines, so if Yakety closes early - as it often does by 7pm if guests are few - you can hop down the stair to one or other by 10pm & grab some decent nosh. Please eat at Yaks if you can tho: nothing fancy but tasty & wholesome enough - and the beer is decent value - a big wide balcony area, bit of an oasis. First couple of nights I stayed was lively, great people-meeting venue, chat, laugh, sing songs. Quieter as the week went on; hostels ebb & flow with personalities yadda-yakety. What is really great is that the rooms & dorms are behind a wall dividing the social areas & the slumber ones, so even if it happens to be a rowdier night, you're well padded for shut-eye. Toilets are at the end of the hall, clean & functional enough. If you're needing photocopies of onward flight tix etc, the cheery faces at reception will oblige. And Hrithik is a sports fan, so if there's a big game of football at 2am for example, you can ask to lounge on the sofas with him & cheer on your team; at a reasonable volume, because of the design, it doesnt disturb your fellow guests.
