Senganen
Zzinnia_615Sengaen Garden was built in 1658 by Mitsuhisa Shimazu, the 19th generation head of the Shimazu family.
The Shimazu family was a famous samurai family in Japanese history. They ruled the Satsuma Domain (now the Kagoshima area) for hundreds of years. Senjuen was originally the residence and garden of the Shimazu family.
The design of Xianyi Garden combines the characteristics of natural landscape and man-made garden. The garden not only has typical Japanese garden elements, such as ponds, waterfalls, stone lanterns and walking trails, but also a highlight is the "borrowed scenery" - using the Sakurajima Volcano and Kinko Bay in the distance as part of the garden background to create a natural atmosphere. A unique landscape that blends into one.
During the Tokugawa period (mid-19th century), the Shimazu family not only had important political influence, but also promoted Japan's modernization. The "Shangko Collection Hall" built near Sengaen is one of the witnesses of industrialization in the Meiji era. It was once used as an industrial experimental site for cast iron, glass production and other industries. The park is therefore not only a recreational garden, but also has a close connection with the modernization efforts of the Satsuma Domain.
Senjuen Garden is currently listed as a scenic spot in Japan and designated as a national important cultural property, making it one of the most representative historical and cultural sites in the Kagoshima area.
