Yagyuso is traditionally elegant, understated luxury ryokan. The room is comfortable, the food is exquisite, the tableware is very beautiful, the proprietress is enthusiastic, and the service is just right. Their open-air hot spring is really first-class. Soaking in the hot spring and enjoying the beautiful scenery around you makes you feel happy physically and mentally! Will go again.

My wife and I just returned from an incredible 1-night stay at this ryokan. We really enjoyed our time, including the room, the dinner, the private outdoor onsen in our room, and the beautiful little onsen town of Shuzenji. The stay is very private - all rooms were booked during our stay, but we never heard nor saw another guest. We woke up early in the morning and went for a walk to the top of the forested hill above the town where there’s a great view of Mount Fuji, then returned in time for the beautiful breakfast in our room. Service was wonderful, with minimal language barrier. We would love to come back again some day. Shuzenji is about 1.5 hours from Tokyo on a combination of Shinkansen to Mishima, then local train to Shuzenji, then it’s a 10-min taxi ride from the station to the ryokan. You can also take the daily Odoriko Express (the regular Odoriko, not the super fancy Saphir Odoriko) straight from Tokyo Station to Shuzenji, but it’s 2 hours and doesn’t give you much flexibility when you travel. On our way to Tokyo, we ended up having the taxi take us all the way from the ryokan to the Shinkansen station in Mishima, which was 8,000 yen and faster and more comfortable than the local train. If doing this again, I may also consider renting a car in Mishima so as to have more freedom to explore the surrounding area around Shuzenji. It may be helpful to know that the ryokan is adjacent to a street that runs through town. We stayed in the Ichiju room, which was one of the largest rooms at the property. I was a little surprised that the view from the front of the room was over the front of the ryokan and the road. The road was not terribly busy and it wasn’t a big deal, but know that all rooms are not looking out over a bucolic garden as the pictures may suggest. Our onsen was on the side of the building and was completely private.

The stay at Yagyu no Sho was very magical. The room that we stayed in was on the second floor with its own private bath. It was a very large room with many small rooms within. The room was very clean and felt luxurious. The service staff were wonderful. A special shout out to Taeko. She made our stay extra special with her wonderful demeanors. The meals were amazing both for dinner and breakfast. They were so abundance and beautifully made. They offered public bath within the facility and they were clean and well kept. Recommended !

I DON’T recommend this ryokan! It fails to deliver the quality of service that matches its pricing. Firstly, having a few bugs in the room might be tolerable, but finding them emerging continuously from the futon and mattress is unacceptable. Around midnight, bugs resembling termites started appearing from the bedding. We had no choice but to call front desk for assistance. Despite their efforts, the staff couldn't contain the infestation. Instead of offering a room change, they simply replaced the futon and mattress. Having stayed at luxury hotels worldwide, I've never encountered such an issue with bugs in the bed. This is intolerable, and the hotel’s response was inadequate and disappointing. The quality provided does not justify the cost. I have stayed at many onsen ryokans in Hakone and Izu, where the occasional insect might enter through the window, but the bedding has always been clean. Even at less expensive hotels, I've never experienced anything like this. It was extremely unpleasant. We couldn't rest or relax here. Even after the bedding was changed, insects occasionally appeared on the floor, and we spent the night worried they might crawl back into the futon. This is not the standard I expect from a luxury establishment like Yanagi no Sho. I am deeply disappointed. Telling someone that I had to call staff at midnight to deal with bed bugs would make it seem like I was staying at a roadside motel. The next morning, I voiced my complaints to the hotel’s general manager, who offered apologies but no substantial compensation. I recorded videos and took photos of the bugs on the bed. I won’t be returning and will advise my family and friends to avoid this place. Moreover, the onsen’s cleanliness was also a concern. The outdoor bath had leaves and insects floating in it, and the bottom was littered with dead bugs. I even took a photo of a large spider in the indoor rest area. Finally, the dinner was underwhelming and not worth the price. Despite hearing high praises about the food at Yanagi no Sho, the meals at other ryokans in Hakone and Ito, which cost half as much, were far superior. The only satisfactory aspect was the polite and attentive service from the dining staff. They were very courteous and meticulous in their service. The overall ambiance of the hotel was decent. I hope my unpleasant experience was an isolated incident.

I heard that it was a wonderful inn, so I took my 1-year-old child here. Although it is a little far from the downtown area of Shuzenji Onsen town, it is within walking distance, and as you take a leisurely stroll through the local residential area, you will find Yagyu no Sho tucked away among the trees. The entrance is paved with gravel and has a nice sound, and when you enter the building, the room is beautiful from the entrance, and this time it was decorated with freshly harvested rice from Shuzenji. The painting of the group sparrow is also very nice and matches the atmosphere of the inn. You can feel the craftsmanship throughout the building, and the flower arrangements are beautiful. This time we stayed in the most affordable room, and it was spacious with a sunken kotatsu and a dirt floor, and the bath was large enough to accommodate a family of four. The interior of the room has been designed with various features such as the flooring, wood, walls, and ceiling, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of Japanese architecture. After being served matcha tea and sweets, I headed to the open-air bath. There was a bit of a walk up and down some stairs, but the bath was spacious and the greenery was beautiful. After the hot spring, you can take a rickshaw from Shuzenji Onsen to your accommodation for a 30-minute round trip, and then enjoy dinner. When it was time for dinner, the person in charge of the room came to greet me, and he was a very lovely and nice person who took care of me in various ways. The food is as good as its reputation, elaborately prepared, and both fun and delicious. I'm happy to be able to bring hot, freshly prepared food to my room. After that, pull up your futon, take a bath in your room, and go to bed. You can adjust the temperature of the bath, but since I don't like hot water, I asked for it to be 39 degrees. The futon is single-sized and a little thick, so if you are traveling with small children, you may be worried about it being a bit cramped and falling off. My child probably got out of the futon early and slept on the tatami mat because it was hot. LOL The open-air bath is open even at night, so if you're a couple, it's a good idea to go to the hot spring instead. We had a refreshing and delicious breakfast, took a quick dip in the other open-air bath, and then purchased Shuzenji's new rice and local specialty donko, which were displayed at the entrance and sold at the shop, before checking out in our room. The landlady greeted me at the entrance when I saw her off, and she was a wonderful woman. I think this is truly a top-level inn where you can bring your children. It was a truly wonderful stay. I would love to visit again with my family.

I visited with my family for the first time in a year. This time, I stayed at Umenoo. I was able to step out on the bamboo-covered edge and relax while listening to the flow of the river. I could enjoy the sound of the river from the open-air bath in a splendid room carved out of stone. I was also very satisfied with the meal. Mr. Nakai was also a very nice person and we had a wonderful time.

I visited this inn for the first time in 5 years. If I had to describe it in one word, it would be "beauty." You can feel that everywhere, and it creates a space that makes you feel the most comfortable. From the gate and the atmosphere the moment you step into the entrance, it's already in a class of its own (usually there are one or two things that make you question or point out something, but this was not the case at all). A true first-class inn with tradition and unique style. Even the bath is cool lol. To be honest, the quality of the water is not that good because it's Shuzenji, but perhaps because there are only a few rooms, you won't be overlapped with other guests, and it's comfortable. For those who can afford it, there are rooms with open-air baths and super-high-end rooms. (I can't afford it yet though lol) The food is standard kaiseki. The sense of the tableware is as expected, and the food itself is wonderful. It's not the type of place that surprises or makes new discoveries, but it has a unique originality and special feeling that is unique to this place, and it's relaxing. What's amazing about this inn is that, despite its commitment to beauty and "class and dignity," it doesn't feel stiff at all. There is no ulterior motive to make it look better than it really is. Therefore, families are welcome. When I first visited, my eldest son was 1 and a half years old, and I remember the husband holding him on the way home and taking a photo with him. I was worried about what would happen when I brought my three children, but I think the children were a little quieter than usual, perhaps because of the atmosphere of the inn... lol As far as I know, it is definitely one of the best inns.
