Very clean room, rustic and homely bar, with a laid back island atmosphere. The pool table has probably seen better days ;) decent jukebox. Ask for room 12, the bathroom is HUGE. Excellent breakfast. . The 3 local distilleries, Ardbeg, Lagavulin, and Laphroig, are within reasonable hiking distance. About a 30 minute hike to Laphroig, and another 30 in between each of the others. There's a brand new walk/cycle path along the road which makes the hike safe and enjoyable. The town of port Ellen is quite picturesque and the people are very friendly. Would definitely stay at the White Hart again.

We visited this lovely b and b on a trip to the island following my port ellen born mother’s recent death.I stayed here years ago when it was the white hart.it has been beautifully restored.the staff are lovely and the breakfast is great.the only downside was the Wi-Fi and the tvwould not work in room 14.this does not stop us giving 5 stars as Wi-Fi connectivity seems to be an issue generally on Islay.Doesnt stop us giving 5 stars however and would always stay. Here again

A friendly welcome, comfortable bed and warm bedroom and a delicious breakfast made this a great stop. No restaurant but a lively bar area with helpful staff is part of the setup. Tremendous range of whiskies for tasting. Port Ellen is small but the three distilleries are out of town a bit a need a car. The golf course is in terrific shape even in December with fabulous views across the water to the western peninsula of Islay.

We spend a wonderfull evening at the white hart restaurant wich is the headquarter of all scottish gymnasts. The staff was very healthy and sporty and the meal was awesome! Dynamic service, beautifull dishes and tasty wine, soup and gin&tonic. The furniture is modern, design and full of colours and wonderfull objects of decoration : swords nailed on the wall, fake plants, empty whisky bottles, a splendid vacuum cleaner parking space, fully decorated restrooms and a funky dancefloor! If you want to spend a unforgettable night and if youn are a gymnast-fan, so it's the place to be in Islay!

I thought shared toilet and bathrooms were a forgotten chapter in Scotland, but am sorry to say that I got into a surprise here:-( Single room, only £60 a night, but that was in fact a stiff price.. The room had a wall-to-wall carpet with a large stain of "something" in the middle. Trying to fall asleep in the evening was interrupted by a youth club or discotheque in the neighboring building. Luckily it didn't last too long - it went quiet around 2am :-( The restaurant was seriously good, I had "Hebridian Duck", and it was excellent! I would not return for a room, but perhaps for a dinner :-)

Joy is a perfect b&b host, it is easy to feel at home in her company. The rooms are spacious and clean, and the breakfast good, varied and plentiful. We had two rooms with nice views over Port Ellen bay. Very central and quiet. Near to the 3 distilleries walking path, which is both a nice walk on a beautiful trail and a great way of trying rare whiskies. Both restaurants in Port Ellen and the guided distillery tours should be booked in advance as we learned the hard way…
