Honestly one of the loveliest hotels we’ve stayed at as a family. From the moment you walk in the gorgeous furnishings and devine smell hit you, they diffuse the most wonderful aroma around the entrance lobby that if it was sold as a candle I would buy 100’s! The facilities, staff and food were amazing with the selection and quality of each dining experience total heaven. Everyone is catered for! My 4 year old adored the freshly made pancakes in the morning to the incredible selection of fresh seafood in the evenings. The treatments in the wellness suite are so relaxing and a special mention to Jorge for his wonderful full body massage. The gym and indoor pool provide a wonderful escape from the family pool area with the gym being fitted out with high quality equipment which was a pleasure to use every morning. The variety of both adult and kids activities gave something for everyone with Pilates and yoga with the amazing Irene to pool biking with Elena and spin with Fran provided a great balance to amazing food we all consumed! This hotel caters for singles, couples, friend groups and families with something for everyone but not to the detriment of the other groups. As a mum I definitely longer for sometime in the adult only section as it looked and sounded so peaceful and tranquil! The bedrooms were incredibly comfortable with everything you need for an utterly relaxing and restful stay. A very special mention to Irene, Mario, Fran, Elena and Maria for their hardwork and constant smiles! We will definitely return!

We originally stayed at this hotel in 2022 - room with balcony - and 2023 - upgraded to room with large balcony and beautiful sea view ( we didn’t ask for this). This year we were given a small room with a balcony that we could barely stand on, more of a window ledge, see pic! When we complained we were told this was a standard room and that both of our previous stays must have been upgrades. It put a dampener on the holiday as we do like to sit out on the balcony. Also, no drawers in room to put clothes in. Apart from this, beds really comfortable, tea and coffee making facilities in the room, food tasty but never hot enough, however they have now provided microwaves. The resort is beautiful with stunning beaches. We will return but not to this hotel.

Beautiful hotel and good food but a shame about the mosquitoes in the rooms and the lobby/plaza where they do the entertainment. Nasty mosquitoes, nothing worked on them: repellent on skin, repellent plugs or spray. You need to hire a car if you want to go anywhere outside Isal Canela as the bus service runs only every two hours. Score of 4 only because of mosquitoes and shortage of transport.

After upgrading to The Level the previous two years, we were excited to be returning to see the major renovations that had taken place during the winter closure. However, works were still ongoing and we were unable to experience the finished look. The positives - nicer lobby feel with reception moved to the side; beautiful comfortable Level lounge; new tiling around pools. The quality of food for breakfast and at the 2 hour 'cocktail time' remained high, as did the service given by the staff. We enjoyed a lovely couples massage at the spa The negatives - the Level lounge was overrun as soon as the cocktail time started, resulting in the tapas quickly running out. Items were periodically replenished, but unless you were actually sat inside (as many groups or families did) you were unsure when to try again to get some food. The area for getting snacks and drinks was clearly not big enough for the number of people using it. The Level has lost it's exclusive pool and sun deck, which has now become open to all guests aged over 16. This has made it a quieter area, but many more people were migrating there from the main pool. This resulted in no sun loungers being available in the afternoons. The hotel needs to add more to the grassed area, plus additional parasols. The biggest disappointment for us, was that the Casa Nostra Level restaurant was not yet completed. We missed having breakfast on the terrace with the beautiful view of the fishing boats passing on the estuary. Instead breakfast was being served in the pool bar. This was such a contrast to before, set in an area not at all suited to an upmarket Level experience. The indoor cold buffet items did not have enough space and the breads and pastries had to have cloths over them to stop the birds from getting to them. The coffee machines were on top of the bar counter and were too high for shorter people to operate easily. The outside seating area had puddles after the early morning poolside cleaning, there were drains with a bad smell and worst of all, a smoking area within touching distance of the eating tables. All in all we felt short changed for the high price we had paid and we shall not be returning. I must finish by mentioning a couple of names where we received excellent service - Maru on reception was very welcoming and helpful with our requests and our friend Maria in the Level lounge who worked so hard and was always pleasant no matter how busy she was.

Very disappointing stay at the Meliá Isla Canela. Reception staff at check in were rude and did not provide any information about hotel facilities. The room (ground floor/river side) was ok but the corridor leading to it was dark & with stained carpet. There was an intermittent smell of smoke in the room, perhaps coming through wall vents from surrounding balconies. Most of the staff were unfriendly and completely indifferent to english speaking guests. It very much felt like a two-tier experience where customer service was reserved for Spanish guests only. In all my years holidaying abroad, I have never experienced this before. The least one should expect on holidays is a friendly greeting or welcoming smile when interacting with guests. This did not happen during our 7 day stay at this hotel. We stayed on an all-inclusive basis and it was disappointing a not worth the money. Breakfast was the best meal of the day. The lunch and dinner offering in the Mosaico Restaurant was very hit & miss. Heavy bias on fish dishes to suit Spanish guests. Poor quality cuts of meat for all the other non-fish dishes. Pizza with odd toppings like stilton cheese. No ice-cream or cream served with desserts, just yoghurt which was odd. Bar staff were poorly trained and not overly friendly. If you asked for a cocktail you would see them consulting a manual for the instructions to make it. Quality of drinks served depended very much on which staff member made it. The entertainment offering for guests was poor. Aqua bike in the pool seemed to be as good as it got. The resort of Isla Canela itself had absolutely nothing of note or interest that we could determine. Impossible to get a seat on the local bus to Ayamonte which runs every two hours. Wanted to go for a break from the monotony of the hotel, though I suspect that Ayamonte itself would also have been a disappointment with little to no Andalusian charm. I would have thought that a courtesy bus to run Isla Canela hotel guests to Ayamonte would be a benefit to the local economy. Ironically, the guest experience team (clones with beards & chinos) spent lots of time with clipboards, presumably working on customer service plans while doing nothing to engage with the english speaking guests in front of their noses. Similarly a team from Melia head office arrived at the end of the week to assess how their 'product' could be improved. It would be more in their line to 'mystery shop' the hotel and experience the stellar customer service for themselves. We did note that the dinner offering on that evening was the best of week! I would never return to Isla Canela and would be slow to book a Melia hotel again after this experience. If you have not yet booked this hotel, don't.

On a half board family trip for six nights with tui! Chose this hotel as we love the chain. Positives: beds are super comfortable, large rooms with lovely balconies and views. Morning and evening meals have a large selection and are delicious. Plenty of sunbeds. Entertainment team is fabulous and so are the kids club staff members. Negatives: Most staff members are rude - especially guest experience, some bartenders, some reception staff and all of the staff working in the morning and evening buffet restaurant and in the welness area. (And we've only been here two days) We were also charged for drinking water for our evening meal (the bottle was opened and it seemed like tap water). I complained and was told that the hotel has no responsibility to provide us with clean drinking water! So if I don't want to pay for tap water, my seven year old goes thirsty in a four star hotel!!! Also pool is freezing cold! We will definitely not be visiting again!

Stayed here in 2023. In 2024 we stayed in Barcelo Isla Canela. I didn't do a review in 2023 but having stayed in Barcelo in 2024 I can tell you this is the better of the two hotels by far. Service is they key, both hotels sit in good locations, both have good facilities etc, but the service in Melia Vs Barcelo there is a clear difference in favour of Melia. There really was nothing to fault in Melia in 2023. Wonderful when I return to Isla Canela I know where to return to, see you in 2025.
