"Couldn't snag a room at the popular Hermitage five months in advance? Haka House Aoraki Mt Cook Youth Hostel ends up being a ”reluctant alternative” for accommodation in Mount Cook. A double room here costs NZD 349 per night, and the facilities are as basic as a budget hotel, offering far less value for money than Queenstown's same-price B&Bs. For backpackers, a bunk in a shared dorm for NZD 74 per night is a better fit. The communal bathrooms and kitchen, though old, are clean and suitable for self-catering to save money.
The highlight is its excellent location; it's a 10-minute walk to the trailhead, and late at night, you can step outside to see the Milky Way and snow-capped mountains. However, the double rooms have poor soundproofing and inadequate heating. During peak times, you might have to queue for the bathroom, so bringing your own slippers and earplugs is recommended. If you're driving and on a budget, I highly recommend staying in Twizel, a 30-minute drive away. You can get a standard motel room for around a hundred NZD – wouldn't you rather spend the savings on salmon? If you're staying overnight in Mount Cook, just book a hostel bunk!"
