酒田市在江戶時代因為北前船和西廻り航路而發展起來，被稱為“西之堺、東之酒田”，是一個繁榮的港口城市。昭和51年（1976年）发生的酒田大火，市區中心幾乎全被燒毀。
創業於大正15年（1926年）的最上屋旅館，在這場大火中大部分的建築都保留了下來。在創業的初期主要經營寄宿屋，過了5年左右的時候才轉為旅館。现在老闆的曾祖父是第一代，因為是木材商，所以旅館的各部分都使用了當時最優質的木材。老闆的經營方針是不更新建築物，而是保持舊的狀態。比起便利性，保留著古旧感的館內和客房對於喜歡這種東西的客人是最好的體驗。

中ノ沢温泉にある、温泉旅館。立ち寄り入浴で利用させていただきました。渓流露天風呂があり、雪の日で雪見露天でよかったです。内湯の小さな檜浴槽が素晴らしい。酸性硫黄泉がほどよくやわらかくて気持ちいい。宿のご主人もいい方でした。入浴料700円。

設備は古くみられましたが客室はきれいに清掃がされておりました。 食事は大変美味しく印象に残るものでした。別注の馬刺しはとても美味でした。 お風呂は湯量豊富な中ノ沢温泉だけあり素晴らしいものでした。深夜帯は入浴できないのは残念でした。
